I need to explain, however, that I enjoy literature that is somewhat experimental, as long as there is the element of 'humanity' in the writing, something that allows us to see the human condition in all our beauty and ugliness.

I deeply admire Cormac McCarthy's work.

For readers who are not used to dialogue that is unmediated and without quote marks, then those readers will have an orientation issue.

Also, he's highly descriptive...BUT, to me the description is highly poetic.

I don't know if you have Kindle (I'm right in the middle of writing this, so I can't check), but if you do own one, download the first chapter (or whatever it is that Amazon allows) and read it. If it doesn't grab you, then his writing may not be for you.

Another suggestion (if you don't own a Kindle), is to go to a bookstore and get a Cappuccino and a book by him and see if the writing does anything for you.

He's highly regarded critically, but his work is not easy.

I'm currently reading 4th book in the series Alvin Maker by Orson Scott Card. I didn't use to like fantasy novels but after reading The Farseer Trilogy, I started reading the top fantasy books. And Alvin Maker is also a good one.

I would call it "dry, lifeless, cold, parched with struggling and striving streaks of life"...but in a really good, intentional way. I enjoyed The Road far more than I enjoyed No Country For Old Men (though I read the latter first, and enjoyed it, which encouraged me to read the former). Post-apocalyptic fiction rarely feels so...poetic?

The first Alvin book is one of my favorite books of all time. The rest seemed to decrease in quality as they went on. They had bits that were great, but in general I just didn't feel they were stories as well told as the first one.

I just started "reading" actually listening to Ender's Game in audio book. I hope it makes my walks seem shorter.

I've just finished the 'Master Butcher's Singing Club' by Louise Erdrich, she's one of my favourite authors.

Thinking about reading Prague next -- quite different from what I usually read. Has anyone read it? Would you recommend it?
