Book about People Getting Killed in Yellowstone Park. Marked Down 90%, to 99 Cents!
That's really what the book is about, although the title of the book makes the subject sound a little more pleasant. Frankly, the subject matter of this book does not appeal to me in the least, but it may to some of you. Coupled with that, its markdown is huge (making for a very low price), the ratings are very high, and the book is big. That makes it a must-post for me.
Enjoy. Or whatever. Death in Yellowstone: Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First National Park. By Lee H. Whittlesey. Rated 4.5 stars, from 49 reviews, at Amazon at the present moment. Print list price $18.95; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $0.99. Roberts Rinehart, publisher. 440 pages. https://www.amazon.com/Death-Yellows.../dp/B00HRX0PQM. Book Description The chilling tome that launched an entire genre of books about the often gruesome but always tragic ways people have died in our national parks, this updated edition of the classic includes calamities in Yellowstone from the past sixteen years, including the infamous grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 2011 as well as a fatal hot springs accident in 2000. In these accounts, written with sensitivity as cautionary tales about what to do and what not to do in one of our wildest national parks, Whittlesey recounts deaths ranging from tragedy to folly—from being caught in a freak avalanche to the goring of a photographer who just got a little too close to a bison. Armchair travelers and park visitors alike will be fascinated by this important book detailing the dangers awaiting in our first national park. |

FREE PDF of the U.S. Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer!
I'm posting this ebook to help you all in the northern hemisphere who will be suntanning this summer to tan responsibly. And, of course, for those of you who suntan year-round in the suntanning salons.
The book is sold regularly at Amazon (not in digital form, though, apparently). Buying one there would lighten your wallet by at least $20. You can get it free here. In addition to, or in lieu of, the PDF format, you can read this book in the brand new format based on html5 called "PubReader." You might be interested in checking that out, if nothing else, so as to be the first one on your block to have done it! ![]() Title: The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer. Format(s): PDF. Author(s): U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Publisher: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Pages: viii + 101. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): No ratings yet at Amazon or GoodReads. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: $19.95 (Paperback, New). Book Description (excerpted from the book, via NCBI): This document is a Call to Action to partners in prevention from various sectors across the nation to address skin cancer as a major public health problem. Many partners are essential to this effort, including federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial governments; members of the business, health care, and education sectors; community, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations; and individuals and families. The goal of this document is to increase awareness of skin cancer and to call for actions to reduce its risk. The first section describes the problem of skin cancer and its major risk factors. It also discusses the relationship between exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and health. The second section describes the current evidence on preventing skin cancer, including current initiatives in the United States and in other countries. The third section describes the gaps in research related to skin cancer prevention, highlighting areas of research where more work is needed. The fourth section identifies specific opportunities to prevent skin cancer by reducing UV exposure in the U.S. population and calls for nationwide action. This document also includes six appendices, which provide further detail about specific topics . . . . Comments: I believe this to be a legal free download because there is a link for it on the National Center for Biotechnology's webpage of "free online access to books . . . .". Clicking on it takes you to another NCBI webpage, which is one for the book, where there is a direct link to the PDF of the book (given below). URL: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NB..._NBK247172.pdf (direct link). Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-26-2016 at 07:56 PM. |

I'm almost certain that this has been mentioned before in this forum, but it bears repeating for the newbies among us, those who have forgotten about it, et al. Microsoft provides a huge number of free ebooks about using their software products.
At the present, there are approximately 500 such books available. Lots of the ebooks come in all three of our favorite flavors--mobi, ePub, and PDF. A smaller number, it appears, come in only PDF, and some come only in proprietary Microsoft formats like docx. I suggest that you follow one of the following links to start your exploration: For Windows Users. For Mac Users. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-29-2016 at 05:38 PM. |

"Official" Calibre User Manual. FREE.
I don't know how many of you who use Calibre are aware of the existence of what I'll call "the official Calibre user manual." I ran across a note today, that I had made to myself for the time when I finally start using Calibre to convert and manage my ebooks. The note has on it the URL for the free Calibre user manual located on Calibre's website.
As an experiment, I tried locating the user manual on Calibre's website, starting from the homepage. I did eventually locate it, but the path to it is far from obvious. So . . . . I thought that it might be helpful to one or more MobileReader--maybe especially one or more newbie--to have the link to the Calibre user manual. Here is the webpage that has the links to the available formats. FYI--The links to the manual are in the body of the text on the above-referenced webpage, near the bottom of the first screen. The ebook is available in three different formats: ePub, PDF, and AZW3 (Kindle Fire). But if you have Calibre, that won't really matter, will it? ![]() |

Probably should be considered a self-pub; therefore, moved to the Less than $3 thread.

Thanks. It seems like that is given as an exception on most of the threads which prohibit self pubs. I was aware of that being an exception on this thread. However, I couldn't really attest to the book, other than from the normal research that I do on an item (ratings, sometimes reviews, sometimes Kindle store sales rank, et al.). I don't consider that enough to satisfy the requirement.

FREE Official State of Nevada Travel Guide, Plus a Couple of Other Great FREEBIES!
Most, if not all, of the States of the United States publish some kind of travel guide to their state. Most, like this one, are distributed free. After all, each state has a vested interest in people coming to their state to visit, because visitors bring money.
I like to look through states' travel guides even if I have no plans to visit the states. Sure, you've got to look past all of the hype within them about how "we're the most beautiful state, we have more fun things to do than any other state, blah, blah, blah," and usually commercial advertisements within them. But most of the time they're full of truly helpful information and, often, beautiful photos. And I don't have to pay a dime for it. ![]() There's no reason for me posting a travel guide to the particular state of Nevada, other than the fact that I ran across the guide on the Web recently, as I was researching for something else. If you can stand two more great freebies, I suggest these that I also ran across. They are both published by Nevada Magazine, which is a non-free subscription magazine that appears to be published by the State's official tourism department. One is Nevada Rides, the 2014 Motorcycle Guide. I know that there may not be many motorcyclists among MobileReaders, but I suggest this book because most, if not all of the trips can easily be adapted for automobiles. And some of them look like they would make great day trips (I love day trips) from different locations. The other freebie is the 86-page May/June 2014 Sesquincentennial Special Edition of Nevada Magazine. It's rich. Title: Don't Fence Me In: Nevada's Official Travel & Leisure Guide. Format(s): PDF. Author(s): The Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (Nevada). Publisher: The Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (Nevada). Pages: Approximately 120. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. Book Description (from Governor Brian Sandoval, inside the Guide): You are about to explore one of the most remarkable states in the nation — one that draws visitors from around the world to Las Vegas, while also holding hidden gems such as Great Basin National Park. Nevada is a state of incomparable beauty, from Lake Tahoe — the largest alpine lake in North America — to Valley of Fire State Park, home of stunning red sandstone formations. This is a state where roadways lead to mining towns brimming with the history of the American West. Road trips are at the heart of the Nevada experience, and I encourage you to travel our highways and byways. Inside this year’s guide, you’ll find itineraries to help plan your trip — including two that highlight Nevada’s American Indian cultural sites. Comments: I believe this to be a legal free download, because it is offered as a free download on the state of Nevada's official travel and tourism website, on this webpage. 3 FREE PDF Ebooks about Leather, Especially Its Use as Bindings for Physical Books.
The following three ebooks are provided as free downloads by a company in England, called Harmatan and Oakridge Leathers 2008 Ltd. They are a manufacturer of fine goatskins and calfskin bookbinding leathers (remember those? ha).
You may notice that the copyright date, of 1905, is given on two of the books (I couldn't find a date for the third one, but it is old, too). You may be wondering why I'm posting these. They are well out of copyright? Right? Well, apparently they aren't, because they were copyrighted in England and/or the U.K., which have different copyright laws than in the U.S. In each one of the pdfs below, there is a statement relating to the fact that the books are copyrighted and not to be reused without permission. I do believe these to be legal free downloads, due to the fact the website of the company who made the electronic version offers them on their website as downloads, and without any caveats, etc. Even though I'm a full participant now in the digital revolution in books, I still love the tactile feel of a physical book in my hands, and its appearance on a shelf (I even love to smell them!). So, I found these books to be interesting. I hope that you do, too. The links below are all direct links to the pdfs. Leather for Libraries. Leathers for Bookbinding & Upholstery. The Wonderful Story of Leather. |
