Holding it in your hand sold you -- so you DO like the form factor and ergonomics, I take it? It's the display and color/lighting issues that is "so disappointing"?

Yep, love them. When I first saw the device I said 'no way, that looks hideous, that looks super awkward to hold' etc. but as it turns out the device is probably one of the greatest feeling devices I've ever held in my hands... If it was a phone I don't think the shape would work but because it is a dedicated reading device, the whole package just kind of 'fits' - its hard to explain. It feels really luxe and like something special, even though it is so light. The case is super cute too would give anything for a device with a screen that's just one colour but every rose has it's thorns I suppose... It's probably up there with my old BlackBerry Bold as one of my most favourite devices ever. It feels like a third hand already! Hoping my replacement arrives soon.

Just tried go exchange but Officeworks don't have them in stock any more... but gradient or no, the Oasis is fast becoming my most favourite ereader ever! Who'd have thought, wasn't particularly excited about it at all... Gonna wait a bit for some new stock and hopefully get a device without a hideous screen

Haha, I decided to just get a refund once I slept on it. Tired of all that exchanging, re exchanging stuff plus that LA times article finally having my issue all but confirmed, I decided it's just not worth the stress. I'd consider getting one in a few months though if they do manage to iron out all the problems. Waiting on a new Kobo now, though if they don't hurry up I might buy myself a galaxy tablet! I do love and wholly prefer my dedicated ereaders though, but my H2O is becoming a little slow...

Your wait will be longer than a few months as Oasis 1 will more than likely have no changes. Oasis 2 is your best hope for improvement. (I've just looked at the reviews on Amazon and 75% are 4-5 stars. After a cursory look, there's not much discussion about the screen.)

I think a lot of those reviews are from first time kindle owners or people coming from earlier devices where they are not as likely to notice imperfections because the Oasis screen is better than the one they have been using. I don't see many reviews from people who have upgraded from the Voyage and a few times I saw that they noted the better contrast on the Voyage, but the ergonomics of the Oasis trumped all.

I returned 2 Oases and appreciate my near perfect Voyage more than ever now. Between the scallops and the decreased contrast, I just couldn't enjoy reading on the Oasis.

Well, my Oasis arrived today (from Amazon.de). It has all the faults mentioned here on MR in various threads (uneven frontlight, scallops, lesser contrast and yellower screen than the Voyage), but I'll keep it. The uneven light and scallops are not visible in my normal reading conditions (I never read in the dark or very dim room), so they don't bother me. Besides, my Voyage's frontlight is actually more uneven than the Oasis's. The lesser contrast is noticeable when viewed side-by-side with the Voyage, otherwise it's good enough for me. Certainly it's not so bad as to be a dealbreaker. I really like the shape, it's the first Kindle I feel comfortable reading without the cover.

All in all, the Voyage has better screen, but the Oasis has better shape. I'm going to use both of them.

On the homepage of my new Oasis I found "Kindle Solstice User Guide", and the guide starts with the sentence "Welcome to your new Kindle Placeholder". Do I have Kindle Oasis, Kindle Solstice or Kindle Placeholder? Amazon's ways are truly mysterious.
