After subscribing, I double checked my bank account. It appears that they have stolen $17.46 from my account. Since when does FREE mean $17.46?
Have you had a free trial from them before? if so, how long ago?

I don't think so. I created the account today.
Even if I had used the free trial already, it should have just told me I wasn't eligible for the promotion. That is how Audible handles it.

$1.95 -- Peace Is Every Step -- Thich Hanh/ Edoardo Ballerini --> 3.5 hrs/ R-4.7 --> motivational

Quote:
Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life

Whispersync: no deals at this time

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. A ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness" - the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries, meditations, personal anecdotes, and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the listener already is - in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking - and shows how deep meditative presence is available now. Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace. Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices.

The deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage listeners to work for peace in the world as they continue to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindful.

$2.99 -- And Then There Were None -- Agatha Christie/ Hugh Fraser --> 8.4 hrs/ R-4.6 --> mystery

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($10.99) | Kindle ($7.99)

The world's best-selling mystery with over 100 million copies sold!

Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to a lonely mansion on Indian Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear. On the island they are cut off from everything but each other and the inescapable shadows of their own past lives. One by one, the guests share the darkest secrets of their wicked pasts. And one by one, they die . . .

This title was previously published as Ten Little Indians.
Quote:
Amazon.com Review
Considered the best mystery novel ever written by many readers, And Then There Were None is the story of 10 strangers, each lured to Indian Island by a mysterious host. Once his guests have arrived, the host accuses each person of murder. Unable to leave the island, the guests begin to share their darkest secrets--until they begin to die.

New York Times Review
'One of the very best, most genuinely bewildering Christies.' Observer 'The most astonishingly impudent, ingenious and altogether successful mystery story since The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.' Daily Herald 'One of the most ingenious thrillers in many a day.' Time Magazine 'There is no doubt that this is a highly ingenious jigsaw by a master of puzzling.' Books 'There is no cheating; the reader is just bamboozled in a straightforward way from first to last... The most colossal achievement of a colossal career. The book must rank with Mrs Christie's previous best -- on the top notch of detection.' New Statesman 'The whole thing is utterly impossible and utterly fascinating. It is the most baffling mystery Agatha Christie has ever written.'

not being dishonest

To the below posters:

I'm the author mentioned here who posted the link to the free audiobooks.

The link still exists on Goodreads as an RSS feed from my blog...which is also still posted. They are visible on my profile. I haven't removed them contrary to what is posted below.

I'm not, not was I, trying to misrepresent anything. Nor was I trying to mislead anyone.

I shared the link with people who follow me and those other authors, many of whom are interested in all of work.

We all share the same narrator/producer who has done a tremendous amount of work with Audible.

June is Audiobook month and there is a program involving producers and Audible.

I shared the information given to me as a favor to MY readers. These are people who trust me, who are my regular customers. I gain nothing by lying to them. Doing so would only harm the business I've worked so hard to build.

Again, there was no ill intent or deception or hope to cheat people out of anything.

If you still have concerns, please email me directly at tom@pitonpress.com and I'll be happy to discuss.

Thanks for reading.

I only gave Audible the original Goodreads link that has now been taken down, so if anyone else contacts them, it might be helpful to give them these other links that are still active.

ETA: I contacted Audible a second time myself and gave them these additional links.

My understanding was that if someone wanted to send me a book, I would get an e-mail from Audible. I can't say I remember exactly what happened when I went through the process yesterday, but I do know that I didn't get an e-mail, that it was all done with a couple of clicks.

Tom,

Since I was the person who started this by posting a link to your blog, I think that affords me a chance to chime in here. (Then, I'm done, so I don't bring on the wrath of the moderators.) Your GR or blog post may or may not have been dishonest. I would not say it was, as it implies intent, and I can't read your mind. I can say that it was misleading, though.

Audible's "Send This Book" feature is still relatively new to people. Remember, it's something that users only get one shot at using, ever (as far as it comes to receiving a title). As you might guess by the forum title here we care a lot about getting deals and making the most effective use of all of the things audiobook companies offer us.

I, for one, had no idea this was a STB offer. I, personally, would have been disappointed if I had used it for one of these books. That's not to say that I would consider one of your books "not worth it." I simply mean that I would have likely used another method (such as some $ credits with a Whyspersync for Voice matching purchase) to get one of your titles and saved my STB offering to get a much larger tome I could not get at a discount any other way.

If you're still listening to me at this point (I'm trying to be reasonable here), all I would suggest is that when you post an offer like this, just mention that it is using Audible's shiny new "Send This Book" feature. This way those people who are still interested can take advantage of your offer.

That's my two cents. Take it or leave it. And, to the rest of you, my apologies for both starting this whole chain of events and for my overly-verbose rantings here.

I think it is clear this was bad marketing. I hope Audible does handle this appropriately.

Do you get to keep the title that is sent to you? I was under the impression it worked like Kindle Lending. Maybe not if you can keep it and loan the book to more than one.

Thanks for your response

Thanks for your response to my post.

I wasn't being dishonest or intending to be misleading.

I'm not even a member of Audible, even though I have purchased books from them before. And, of course, my books are distributed through their site (among others).

I was only promoting a free book from among a group of authors who share the same narrator. I really thought I was offering a free book. Nothing more.

I give away audio codes and .mobi (kindle) files all of time for fans who send me emails. They don't ask for them, I just give them away. I figure the goodwill I share with readers is far more valuable than the $2.00 I make off a sale. And one bad experience from a reader negates 1000 good ones.

Why would I (and we're going back to intent here) risk ruining the trust of my readers and potentially new ones by offering something dishonest?

I understand there are hucksters or shysters or whatever you want to call them out there trying to bilk people out of their hard earned money. I'm not one of them.

And if you can't tell by my response, my willingness to open myself to more ridicule by joining the chat, or by sharing an honest exchange on FB with one of your thread members, the idea that anyone thinks I'm dishonest is bothersome.

That said, I apologize to anyone who thinks they were sold a bill of goods. Not my intent. This whole thing came as a huge surprise to me, which is why I feel compelled to engage.

And if you downloaded one these books, feel cheated, and Audible doesn't return your credit...Let me know at my email address listed in this thread and I'll buy you a book myself.

I've updated the post

At your suggestion, I've updated the post to include the following verbiage:

THIS IS A PART OF AUDIBLE'S NEW SEND THIS BOOK FEATURE. It allows you to choose one FREE book from a friend without joining Audible's monthly service.

Think of it like you send the suggestion to someone for a title, and if they pick it up Audible picks up the tab. It's another means to get someone into audiobooks using viral networking (person to person). In that respect it's like a free trial used to work - you get the first book free, and it's yours forever, but you only get one shot at picking it. (I say used to since Audible has let people have more than one free trial in recent years.)
