I feel a pre-order coming on!
Mitford, I think Kobo put the price up ......

I' don't mention prices from non mainstream countries anymore in this thread - I consider that this thread and Discounts and others are monitored because this isn't the first time that a price has gone up significantly during the pre-release period after being mentioned here.
-----------------------------------------

As a general comment, whilst some will say that this is coincidence, others of us who are regulars in the Discounts thread may think differently.

Four titles in Kate Kingsbury's Pennyfoot Hotel series have dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

Room with a Clue, #1
link: https://www.amazon.com/Room-Clue-Pen.../dp/B008FQMNBA
Spoiler:
Quote:
The Pennyfoot hides many secrets and its downstairs staff keeps a tight lip, even when the Edwardian aristocrats are spotted dallying with damsels in the boudoirs, or gambling in the forbidden card rooms hidden below the floorboards. Should now and then one of the hotel guests fall prey to a dastardly murderer, however, it is up to Cecily Sinclair to restore order before Scotland Yard steps in and shuts down her infamous seaside hotel.

ROOM WITH A CLUE

Lady Eleanor Danbury thoroughly enjoyed the view of the ocean from the rooftop garden of the Pennyfoot Hotel, until someone pushed her over to fall four stories to her death. In order to keep secret the goings-on of her illustrious guests, Cecily takes on the task of tracking down a killer. There are no shortage of suspects, since Lady Eleanor managed to alienate everyone with whom she came in contact. That includes the downstairs staff of the hotel, the fellow aristocrats staying at the hotel, and even her own husband. Since Inspector Cranshaw of Scotland Yard is bound and determined to shut down the Pennyfoot and put a stop to all the hanky-panky, Cecily must work fast and be terribly discreet, or she might lose her home and her livelihood….

There are twenty-one books in the Pennyfoot Hotel series, including seven Christmas Editions.

Check-Out Time, #5

CHECK-OUT TIME

In the midst of planning the Midsummer Ball, Cecily receives surprising news. One of the aristocrats staying at the hotel just checked out, in a most bizarre way. After climbing onto his top floor balcony, he did a little dance on the railing and fell to his death. The downstairs staff are convinced the lord was crackers, but Cecily suspects that the victim had a little help with his dive to the pavement and is determined to prove it.

Pay the Piper, #7

PAY THE PIPER

The appearance of Scottish pipers in Badgers End has the downstairs staff of the Pennyfoot Hotel all agog. The pipers are there for the bagpipe contest, and the aristocrats upstairs are just as intrigued by all the excitement. Cecily is as thrilled as everyone else, until one of the contestants is found hanging from a hook in the butcher’s cellar, as dead as the beef carcasses on either side of him.

No Clue at the Inn, #13

NO CLUE AT THE INN

Two years have passed since Cecily Sinclair sold the Pennyfoot Hotel to her cousin and moved to London. When offered the job of managing the hotel again, she finds it hard to refuse. Having married her own manager, Hugh Baxter, the couple return to Badger’s End, and Cecily is soon embroiled in another mystery when a housemaid goes missing, and a prominent barrister also disappears. It’s a Christmas reunion, but the festivities will have to go on hold while Cecily once more goes on the hunt for a killer.

A couple of other titles in this series that were recently on sale are still reduced somewhat, although not as much as they were.

Berried Alive, was $1.99, now $2.99. Info in this previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=3325391

Service for Two, was free, now $1.99. Info in this previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=3324840

I enjoyed this series in DTB days, and hope that more of these titles will go on sale at $1.99 - a totally reasonable price point, IMO, for backlist titles.

The first two titles in the Michael Gideon/Sirius series by Alan Russell have dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

Burning Man, #1
link: https://www.amazon.com/Burning-Man-G.../dp/B008BU74RS
Spoiler:
Quote:
LAPD cop Michael Gideon and his police dog partner Sirius became reluctant celebrities after capturing a notorious serial killer in the midst of an inferno. For their heroism, they were chosen to head up the newly formed Special Cases Unit. Now the duo tackles out-of-the-ordinary cases, anything deemed unusual or bizarre even by Hollyweird standards.

When a teenager is found crucified in a city park, Gideon and Sirius are handed the bizarre case. Confronting the gruesome tableau and having to work the case worsens Detective Gideon’s PTSD, a condition he has tried to hide from others. Gideon’s burns may have healed, but the fire haunts him still...in more ways than one.

Eerily prescient since that terrible night of the fire, Gideon has unusual insights into the crimes he investigates, a skill he and Sirius must learn to trust as much as they do each other if they are to solve—and survive—this case.

Guardians of the Night, #2
link: https://www.amazon.com/Guardians-Nig.../dp/B00K2EOOOC
Spoiler:
Quote:
As the sole members of LAPD’s Special Cases Unit, Detective Michael Gideon and his German shepherd partner Sirius work investigations considered bizarre even by Los Angeles’s standards. Yet their latest case is more than strange—it might be out of this world.

Ronald “Wrong” Pauley is a homeless man long fallen from grace. When Pauley’s late-night drinking is interrupted by a detonation of light, he sees what he describes as a “being of light” in the alley below. Pauley tries to help, but ends up as a witness to what he believes is the murder of a fallen angel.

Gideon and Sirius are already in the midst of trying to determine the identity of the so-called “Reluctant Hero” who seemed to magically appear just moments after shots began ringing out at an elementary school. Braving gunfire, the hero tackled the shooter, and then disappeared.

Both cases defy easy answers, but when Pauley turns up dead, the detectives are left with two murders to solve and lots of questions. Gideon and Sirius—along with help from a newfound friend—investigate that thin line between the real and surreal to make sense of these possible crimes.

A few other random price drops at Kindle US - all to $1.99 unless otherwise indicated.

The Gordonston Ladies Dog Walking Club by Duncan Whitehead
link: https://www.amazon.com/Gordonston-La.../dp/B00FN2KR2G
Spoiler:
Quote:
Little is what it seems to be in a leafy Savannah neighborhood as members of an afternoon cocktail and dog walking club mourn a neighbor’s death. Jealousies surface when friends vie for the widower running for mayor. An old woman with an infamous uncle plots to avenge a wrong. Memories haunt a once successful children’s writer. And a model has won the trip of a lifetime.

But a killer lurks and secrets unfold, as does a web of deceit. Is anyone really who he or she seems to be? A mysterious South American, a young Italian count, and a charitable nephew add suspicion and intrigue, as do an enigmatic organization linked to organized crime, a handsome firefighter, and three widows with hidden agendas. What’s a retired accountant’s secret, and why did a former showgirl really have plastic surgery?

The plot thickens, the Georgia temperature rises, and someone is destined for an early unmarked grave. The truth contorts to a climax that leaves readers breathless.

Until the Debt Is Paid is the first in the Jan Tommen series by Alexander Hartung. I haven't read this one, but I've read and enjoyed several other AmazonCrossing titles.
link: https://www.amazon.com/Until-Debt-Pa.../dp/B00KHGWQO0
Spoiler:
Quote:
Berlin detective Jan Tommen expected to wake up with a hangover—not a murder charge. But a well-known judge has been brutally killed and hard evidence places Jan at the crime scene. When disturbing gaps in Jan’s memory make finding an alibi impossible, the case against him looks open and shut.

Faced with life on the inside, Jan flees police custody to take refuge with an old friend deeply enmeshed in the capital’s seedy underworld. Hampered by a citywide manhunt, Jan soon finds that investigating leads while eluding capture isn’t easy. Before long, he’s relying on a team of misfits for help, including an icy blonde medical examiner and a brilliant but reclusive computer whiz.

When a lucky break leads Jan to connect the murders to a heinous trafficking ring, the team risks it all to find answers. Meanwhile, the body count continues to rise and the police department starts to close in. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jan must identify the true killer—before his time finally runs out.

The lowly security guard jumps at the opportunity to fulfill his private eye fantasies and use everything he’s learned from Spenser, Magnum, and Mannix. As Harvey fumbles and stumbles through his first investigation, he discovers that the differences between fiction and reality can be deadly.

With the help of his mortgage broker neighbor and occasional lover Carol, Harvey uncovers a blackmail plot that takes a sudden and unexpectedly tragic turn…plunging him into a world of violence, deception and murder… and forcing him to discover what it really takes to be a private eye.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Ludwig-Conspi.../dp/B00AXS6BEI
Spoiler:
Quote:
A bold new thriller from the best-selling author of The Hangman’s Daughter series

In 1886, Ludwig II, the Fairy-tale King of Bavaria, was deposed after being declared insane by doctors who had never met him. He died mysteriously soon thereafter, his eccentric and beautiful castles his only legacy. In The Ludwig Conspiracy, master of historical suspense Oliver Pötzsch brings the Mad King back to life.

An encoded diary by one of Ludwig’s confidants falls into the hands of modern-day rare-book dealer Steven Lukas, who soon realizes that the diary may bring him more misery than money. Lukas teams up with a beautiful art detective, Sara Lengfeld, to investigate each of Ludwig’s three famous castles for clues to crack the diary’s code as mysterious thugs and Ludwig’s fanatical followers chase them at every step. Just what in the diary could be so explosive?

"This gripping thriller brings together the present and the past with high-action adventure in a bold, entertaining storyline." — Shepherd Express (Milwaukee)

"Pötzsch makes clever use of Bavaria’s equivalent of the Kennedy assassination in this excellent stand-alone . . . Pötzsch’s sophisticated plotting and good use of a real-life historical puzzle place this far ahead of most Da Vinci Code wannabes." —Publishers Weekly, starred review

One lethal device has already been planted and more have been smuggled deep into the bowels of the great ship ...

It is up to Richard and Robin Mariner to save themselves, their crew and their company.

One mild summer evening, a young couple are enjoying dinner while their daughter sleeps peacefully in her stroller under a tree. When her mother steps outside she is stunned: the child is covered in blood.

Inspector Sejer is called to the hospital to meet the family. Mercifully, the child is unharmed, but the parents are deeply shaken, and Sejer spends the evening trying to understand why anyone would carry out such a sinister prank. Then, just before midnight, somebody rings his doorbell.

No one is at the door, but the caller has left a small gray envelope on Sejer’s mat. From his living room window, the inspector watches a figure disappear into the darkness. Inside the envelope Sejer finds a postcard bearing a short message: Hell begins now.

“No one can thoroughly chill the blood the way Karin Fossum can . . . will put you away, no questions asked.”—Los Angeles Times

NOTE: Although not a recent discount, The Drowned Boy, the 11th title in the Sejer series, is also at $2.99

A new addition to the captivating Inspector Sejer series, the first since The Caller, from Norway’s finest crime writer

Carmen and Nicolai failed to resuscitate their son, Tommy, after finding him floating in their backyard pond. When Inspector Skarre arrives on the scene, Carmen reports that Tommy, a healthy toddler with Down syndrome, wandered into the garden while Nicolai was working in the basement and she was cleaning the house. Skarre senses something is off with Carmen’s story and consults his trusted colleague, the famed Inspector Sejer. An autopsy reveals Tommy’s lungs to be full of soap.

When Sejer and Skarre revisit the couple, Carmen, an epileptic, changes her story, confessing that she’d been knocked unconscious by a seizure while bathing Tommy. When she came to, she found him drowned in the tub and, horrified and frightened, threw him into the pond.

But Skarre and Sejer’s doubt is not appeased and the case is reopened. What more could Carmen be hiding? And what lengths will she take to cover her guilt? As Carmen’s own family starts to doubt her, Skarre and Sejer work to find the truth.

Quote:
In the first book of the acclaimed Henry Rios series, a lawyer doggedly pursues a murder investigation into the lions’ den of San Francisco’s moneyed elite

A burnt-out public defender battling alcoholism, Henry Rios has reached a crossroads in his life. While interviewing his former lover Hugh Paris in jail, Rios goes through the motions, but notices that Paris is far more polished and well off than the usual suspects arrested for drug possession. Paris is mysteriously bailed out—but a few weeks later, he turns up on Rios’s doorstep. Skittish and paranoid, he admits to using heroin and says he’s afraid that his wealthy grandfather wants to murder him.

Rios tries to help Paris get clean, but when Paris is found dead of an apparent heroin overdose, Rios is the only one who considers foul play. Determined to find Paris’s killer, Rios knocks on San Francisco’s most gilded doors, where he discovers a family tainted by jealousy, greed, and hate. They’ve been warped by a fortune someone’s willing to kill—and kill again—to possess.

At once an atmospheric noir mystery and a scathing indictment of a legal system caught in the maws of escalating corruption, The Little Death chronicles one man’s struggle to achieve true justice for all.

The Little Death is the first book in the Henry Rios mystery series, which also includes Goldenboy and Howtown.

In this classic thriller, bestselling author Edward Stewart weaves a complex tale of sex, money, and murder

In a private suite at a New York hospital, Beatrice “Babe” Vanderwalk Devens awakens from a seven-year coma. The socialite and fashion designer is stunned to learn that her husband, Scottie, was brought to trial twice—and acquitted—for her attempted murder.

Across town, the naked, mutilated body of a young man wearing a black leather bondage mask is found in an empty apartment in the Beaux Arts Tower, high atop the Museum of Modern Art. Seven miles away, off-duty NYPD lieutenant Vince Cardozo is relaxing on a Brooklyn beach with his twelve-year-old daughter when he gets the call.

Cardozo’s investigation into the savage murder of the Beaux Arts John Doe takes him into the exclusive lairs of Manhattan’s elite. Babe Devens is part of that world. When Cardozo uncovers a shocking connection between the two cases, it could topple more than just high society.

On the Bone is the 18th and newest title in the excellent (IMO) Inspector Ikmen series by Barbara Nadel. It has just dropped to $5.99 at Kindle US and Kobo US. That may sound like a lot for a "sale" title, but it is the newest in the series, and was at $15.99 or $16.99, or something absurd like that, when it came out in January. I've had it on my watch list, and am happy to see it drop to a very reasonable (IMO) price for a new title.

The brand-new Istanbul crime thriller staring Inspector Cetin Ikmen, 'the Morse of Istanbul' (Daily Telegraph), from Barbara Nadel. ON THE BONE is perfect for fans of Donna Leon.

In Istanbul - the golden city on the Bosphorus - ancient myths and modern evils are at work...

On a buzzing street in the fashionable district of Beyoglu, a young man drops dead. Ümit Kavas's death was natural but the autopsy betrays a shocking truth: his last meal was human flesh.

Under desperate pressure from their superiors, Inspector Cetin Ikmen and his colleague Mehmet Süleyman begin their most obscure investigation yet. How did Ümit Kavas, apparently a good, liberal man, come to partake in the greatest taboo of all? Did he act alone? And who was his victim?

Soon they find themselves embroiled in a dark web of underground worlds: of Turkey's old secular elite; a community of squatters; and a new gastronomy scene breaking every boundary. But where does the truth lie?

NOTE: Land of the Blind, the 17th and next-to-most-recent title in the series, is also a very reasonable $3.99.

Istanbul - in antiquity, called the Land of the Blind - is a city where old and new collide, and the fallout can be deadly...

In the ruins of the Constantinople hippodrome lies a body: a woman, clutching a piece of red stone. She's recently given birth, but there's no sign of the baby. Inspector Çetin Ikmen discovers she was Ariadne Savva, a Byzantine specialist on a crusade to protect the historic areas of Istanbul that property developer Ahmet Öden seeks to destroy and rebuild.

As Ikmen searches for the lost child and the facts behind Ariadne's death, the people of Istanbul rise up in protest against their government in Gezi Park. Amid the chaos, Ikmen and his colleague Mehmet Süleyman must unravel a tale of ancient hostility and modern desires, to find the truth concealed within the secret history of their antique city.

I enjoyed this series in DTB days, and hope that more of these titles will go on sale at $1.99 - a totally reasonable price point, IMO, for backlist titles.
I got this at the FREE point, a week or two ago, and tried it over the weekend. It's set in 1907. OK. But the amount of "women shouldn't do that" made me check the ending to see if, hopefully, Baxter was going to turn out to be the villain. No such luck. Hated the book, so I skimmed extremely quickly to find out who-dunnit. Wow!

Thanks for posting this, I grabbed it and also got the audible narration to go with it for $1.99. It's done by R C Bray, one of my favorite voices
