Goodness me, no! These are not children's stories (& neither were the originals by Dumas).

Death in the Dordogne
Spoiler:
PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED AS BRUNO, CHIEF OF POLICE
It's market day in St Denis, a small town in the Périgord region of South West France. The locals are on the alert because inspectors are expected to make a 'surprise visit' in an attempt to enforce the unpopular and bureaucratic EU hygiene rules.

But for Captain Bruno Courrèges, St Denis' Chief of Police, this particular market day turns into something far more serious.

An old man, head of a local immigrant North African family, is found viciously murdered. Suspicion falls on the son of the local doctor, but Bruno isn't so certain.

He believes it to be an act of vengeance, with its motive hidden deep in France's divisive war-time past. As rumour and mistrust grow, Bruno must look beneath the surface of this normally calm community to find a brutal killer.

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the 9th in the series, Fatal Pursuit, this coming Thursday.

Also on a continuing free basis is the Bruno Christmas short story:
Bruno and Le Pere Noel
Spoiler:
It's the last market day before Christmas and Bruno, Chief of Police is preparing for a traditional gastronomic feast. But, never off duty for long, Bruno is called to action when he receives information that a prisoner on parole has gone missing, last seen heading for St Denis, where his ex-wife and son live.

The goose, the oysters, his English girlfriend's Christmas pudding and Bruno's famous mulled wine will just have to wait…

And if Martin Walker's 'Bruno' novels have inspired you to visit this beautiful part of France yourself, keep reading for the author's own guide to 'A Perfect Week in Perigord'.
I am currently rereading the series in anticipation of the release of Fatal Pursuit on June 21st.

Death of a Red Heroine is the first in the Inspector Chen series by Qiu Xiaolong. Per SKYM, it won or was a finalist for several awards. It has just dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. I read the first four or five titles in this series back in DTB days and very much enjoyed them, so am happy to see this one on sale. Sadly a couple of the rest are $7.99 and the others are $9.99 and up - way too much for me to spend for backlist titles. Not quite sure what publishers are thinking - at $2.99, I'd buy the lot even though I have several in DTB, and up to $4.99, I'd buy the ones I don't have.

Spoiler:
Quote:
Qiu Xiaolong's Anthony Award-winning debut introduces Inspector Chen of the Shanghai Police.

A young “national model worker,” renowned for her adherence to the principles of the Communist Party, turns up dead in a Shanghai canal. As Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Special Cases Bureau struggles to trace the hidden threads of her past, he finds himself challenging the very political forces that have guided his life since birth. Chen must tiptoe around his superiors if he wants to get to the bottom of this crime, and risk his career—perhaps even his life—to see justice done.

The first six of the Lizzy Gardner series are £0.99 each today at Amazon UK.

"When Lizzy Gardner was only seventeen, what should have been the perfect night became the perfect nightmare. Kidnapped just blocks from home after a romantic evening with her boyfriend, Jared, she woke up to find herself at the mercy of a depraved serial killer. Imprisoned and tormented for months by the maniac she came to know as Spiderman, Lizzy narrowly escaped, the only one of his victims to survive. But Spiderman escaped too, outwitting police and cursing Lizzy to spend her life looking over her shoulder…

Fourteen years later, Lizzy is a private investigator who teaches self-defense to teenage girls in her free time. She does what she can to help others protect themselves and to forget the horror of her ordeal, yet fears she will always be known as “the one who got away.” Then she receives a phone call from Jared, now a special agent for the FBI, with grim news. The killer has resurfaced, this time with a very specific target—Lizzy. And he’s made it clear that she will not escape him again. So begins a chilling game of cat-and-mouse, a terrifying, heart-pounding hunt that only one will survive."

The first five titles in the Stacy Justice "reluctant witch" series by Barbra Annino are part of the US Kindle Daily Deal at $1.99 for today only. I haven't read any, but judging from the covers, these look like cozy witch stories, not weird/horror paranormal stories.
  • Opal Fire, #1
  • Bloodstone, #2
  • Tiger's Eye, #3
  • Emerald Isle, #4
  • Obsidian Curse, #5

Two titles in the John Shakespeare series by Rory Clements have dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US, so if you didn't bite earlier at $2.99, here they are for a cheaper price.

Traitor, #4
link: https://www.amazon.com/Traitor-Shake.../dp/B00CGZXQOE
Spoiler:
Quote:
The Elizabethan Bond is back . . .

Under the threat of a second Spanish Armada, John Shakespeare is sent to Lancashire to guard over England's secret weapon and its inventor, the maverick magician Dr. Dee.

But nothing is so simple when the country is a hotbed of secret loyalties and civil unrest. During his mission, Shakespeare stumbles upon Catholic priests in hiding, a mysterious Bohemian seductress, and—of course—murder.

Between facing off with a nefarious witch hunter and attending one of the first performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream, the intrepid John Shakespeare fights to stay alive while on the hunt for a deadly traitor.

The Heretics, #5
link: https://www.amazon.com/Heretics-John.../dp/B00DB3DF1O
Spoiler:
Quote:
An exorcism … a siege … a stealthy killer … What else could go wrong?

John Shakespeare—intrepid private detective and brother to a rising young playwright in Elizabethan London—is approached by a condemned Jesuit priest with an unusual proposition: the Father is haunted by the memory of Thomasyn Jade, a teenage girl subjected to brutal exorcism rites a decade past. He wants Shakespeare to track her down and offer reparations for her treatment.

As Shakespeare begins his investigation, a plot to assassinate the Queen is underway, and rumors of a papist conspiracy begin swirling from Seville. And when, one by one, Shakespeare’s trusted spies are horribly murdered, all clues seem to be linked to the mysterious Thomasyn Jade …

Heart-pounding and packed with fascinating historical detail, The Heretics is a thriller to rival the best of C. J. Sansom and Alex Grecian.

A is for Alibi is the rather famous first title in Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series (now up to "X" in the alphabetical titles - not sure if she will continue with "AA" once she's gotten through "Z"...).

It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Alibi-Kinsey-.../dp/B002HHPVBC

Spoiler:
Quote:
When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. A prominent divorce attorney with a reputation for single-minded ruthlessness on behalf of his clients, Fife was also rumored to be a dedicated philanderer. Plenty of people in the picturesque southern California town of Santa Teresa had a reason to want him dead. Including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, Nikki. With motive, access, and opportunity, Nikki was their number-one suspect. The jury thought so, too.

Eight years later and out on parole, Niki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her late husband.

A trail that is eight years cold. A trail that reaches out to enfold a bitter, wealthy, and foul-mouthed old woman and a young boy, born deaf, whose memory cannot be trusted. A trail that leads to a lawyer defensively loyal to a dead partner--and disarmingly attractive to Millhone; to an ex-wife, brave, lucid, lovely--and still angry over Fife's betrayal of her; to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for too few skills--and too many debts left owing: The trail twists to include them all, with Millhone following every turn until it finally twists back on itself and she finds herself face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

I agree - I think it definitely depends on the child. I also read several of the Dumas titles (full adult versions, not kid versions) when I was about the same age, and enjoyed them.

I have gone back and re-read as an adult, and there were definitely some adult parts that had gone over my head, and I hadn't really understood much of the historical background either, but they were still good stories for a kid who loved reading.

Yes, I read them at that age, too.

These (and whole series of titles [but what series?]) were available in our school library. They had beautiful color illustrations and the books were hardcover. They probably came out in the 40s and 50s in this format.

These were wonderful books. Perhaps they were abridged, but they got me started on a life-time of reading.

They're definitely for children (in that format) - and if one is the right child at the right time.
