It has a free market, but that's not quite the same.

For physical goods, you could choose to buy from Amazon UK, since for physical goods the point of sale in the location of the retailer.

But for ebooks, the point of sale is deemed to be the location of the purchaser, so someone only licensed to sell an ebook in the UK can only sell to people in the UK, not to anyone in the rest of the EU.

It's quite often the case that the publisher with UK rights will be different to the publisher with non-UK EU rights.

Right. But for Scifi books in English, I strongly doubt there is a specific publisher with French right. The market is just too small. So France, and other non English speaking countries. have probably the same publisher as some English speaking country.. Which one may depends on which book, I guess.

But that should be easy to check. I doubt it is legal for a publisher who has the right for several European Union countries to discriminate between these countries.

I didn't mind Battlefield Earth up to a point. Then it did get too much and should have ended. The problem is getting the story without the fluff is not easy and given that there are many good books, not worth the effort.

Wrong. But you can complain to the EU if you disagree.

Even when the same publisher has the same rights, prices may differ, thus I noted a ebook sold at a special low price in UK (it was a set book for an Open University course). Any remote students in Spain had to pay the standard price.

The Silent Voice by Christopher Hodder-Williams

First published 1977 by Weidenfeld and Nicolson

Four men return to Earth from space. Barnes, Ullard, Hewitt, and Staffer have spent years orbiting Mars to collect data. But now they get to come home.
Suddenly, the onboard computer directs them to a new landing path. The men are beginning to feel uneasy. They haven't been in contact with another human at Mission Control for a long time...
With no reserve fuel and tensions rising between the crew, they don't question the new coordinates and safely touch down, back on Earth again.
But there's no welcoming party.
No help.
Nothing.

Christopher Hodder-Williams was an English writer, mainly of science fiction, but he wrote novels about aviation and espionage as well.

I assume this is in preparation for the release of the next book in the series in 2 months. According to his website the promotion's been running since May 18th so I don't know how long the prices will stay this low.

I really enjoyed the "first three" (they are published out of chronological order) books of the series, haven't read the fourth yet.
Its a Urban Fantasy series but not set in the modern world but rather a fantasy setting where the people in the new world (the Americas) overthrew the gods to use their power for themselves with the help of the Craft, magic powered by what amounts to business contracts.
Each book tells a complete story that stands pretty well on its own and features different main protagonists, but characters from earlier books turn up in the later books and events are mentioned.

Edit: For those interested. The books are published by Tor and therefor provided DRM free.
I just noticed that Full Fathom Five is now down to 2.99

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is on sale for $1.99.

Book I of the Gentleman Bastard Sequence. (The 4th book is scheduled to be published this September.)

Quote:
An orphan’s life is harsh—and often short—in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game—or die trying.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley (Bloomsbury Publishing)

Has dropped in price to £1.99 in the UK Kindle and other UK ebookstores.

In 1883, Thaniel Steepleton returns to his tiny flat to find a gold pocketwatch on his pillow. But he has worse fears than generous burglars; he is a telegraphist at the Home Office, which has just received a threat for what could be the largest-scale Fenian bombing in history.

When the watch saves Thaniel's life in a blast that destroys Scotland Yard, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori – a kind, lonely immigrant who sweeps him into a new world of clockwork and music. Although Mori seems harmless at first, a chain of unexpected slips soon proves that he must be hiding something.

Meanwhile, Grace Carrow is sneaking into an Oxford library dressed as a man. A theoretical physicist, she is desperate to prove the existence of the luminiferous ether before her mother can force her to marry.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Watchmaker-...dp/B00WE7Q47K/

The UK pb is out in July so, unusually, a price drop in advance (it was
£7.40 or more less than a week ago) in all UK stores.

Sorry, Bloomsbury US still have it at $9.89
