Each 10 minutes in the cover gives you an hour of reading time. So they told some of the reviewers and it seems to match my use.

Now if you have reading sessions of 7 hours with no breaks, no eating, no bathroom, never putting down the reader for even a minute, it might be an issue. But I read for hours each day, but still have to do this and that in between, even if its just 5 minutes. I put it in the cover for that and then continue reading. I never run out, no matter how long I read. Or one could then stick it in the cover and read with it on. I don't like reading with the cover on so I don't. |

Personally, if I'm reading/eating, I don't want to go find the cover, or plug it into a charger; I just want to eat/read. Some people will always keep it in a cover. Some people won't mind retraining themselves to always put it in/take it out of a cover/charger. Some people like going for longer periods of time not worrying about. I'm currently not using a cover, so my posts probably have that bias. |

As capacity decreases, does a 10 minute charge still give you an hour of reading time? |

But the Oasis is a different device, and needs a different mentality. That's why it is sold as a set, and not purchasable separately. We are meant to perhaps read without the cover (if we wish), but always keep it beside us, and set it down INTO the cover, so that it can recharge any time we set it down. The re-attachment is that easy, so that it can be used this way. We shouldn't have to "go looking for the cover"; it should be how we carry the Oasis around. True, older covers are a PAIN to insert and remove from, but the Oasis cover is made to be much easier.* If this lifestyle just isn't possible for us, then perhaps an Oasis isn't right for us? They've designed a whole different sort of thing here; maybe it's not what you want.

I have never used a cover while reading on any device, but I like to protect my readers when they're not in use so have always stored them in a sleeve. With the Oasis, the cover is as easy to remove as slipping my Voyage out of its sleeve. When I'm done reading, the Oasis goes right back into its cover, just as my Voyage goes back into its sleeve. The Oasis is not meant for people who want a device that can go cover-less all the time. For those people, Amazon made the basic Kindle, Paperwhite and Voyage. |

I would like a separate cover, as I had to purchase one with the black cover. An Oasis with the Merlot cover would have made it 2 months before shipment.

You need to back to your source material and read it again and apply relevance to yourself and to your device. |

So as an example. One starts reading on day 1, on day one they read for 6 hours, and they have 20% battery life left. So... for this mythical reader, the initial "capacity" of the battery is 7.5 hours of reading time. After one year, they are down to 6.3 hours of capacity, and gone through 318 cycles - not looking to good, can't go through one day of reading without recharging (if one must stick to your rule of not abusing the battery) After 2 years, they are down to 4.8 hours of reading capacity, and gone through 713 cycles - That is a lot of cycles After three years, capacity is down to 2.6 hours, and you've gone through 1294 cycles Now let say same someone increases their reading time to 8 hours a day... After one year, they are down to 5.9 hours of capacity (per cycle), and gone through 449 cycles After two years, they are down to 3.5 hours of capacity and gone through 1058 cycles (what is the expected number of cycles for the life of the battery) After 2.5 years you are down to 1.24 hours of capacity and gone through 1650 cycles YRTMV (Your reading times may vary). Given that the biggest factor affecting reading times is how you read, anything else is irrelevant. If reading time vs battery longevity is a particular worrying problem for anyone then they need to educate themselves as to how batteries work and what is the best way of using them. |
