Would anyone question why I have seen multiple productions (both professional and amateur) of Hamlet? Or why I have listened so many times to Schubert's Quintet in C Major? If not, why should there be anything exceptional in rereading?
A lot of my rereading is more a question of looking up specific ideas or passages, to jog my memory. For example, in my mid-teens I read the entire works of Jane Austen. From then on I could usually remember most of it, but, for example, I often revisited the passage at Longbourn between Elizabeth Bennett and Lady Catherine de Bourgh. I could probably quote most of it from memory. But why did I want so much to revisit it? I suppose because it is a classic case of an underdog triumphing over a bully. And most of us may have been in parallel though not identical situations where we have done less well than Elizabeth in this one. IRL we probably failed and then cheered ourselves up by thinking of all the clever things we might have said. But here the author lets Elizabeth give a perfect response. How satisfying! I do indulge in other kinds of rereading too. As others have said, it's like comfort food. I always read myself to sleep. Most of the time I'm tackling something new and perhaps a bit challenging. But there are times when I am tired, depressed or unwell and it's too demanding. So I have recourse to some of my favourite escapism, and it slips down so easily... |

I also tend to re-read when my Overdrive holds list says "you are next in line for this title" for several books at the same time and I have no idea if this means they will all suddenly be available tomorrow, or availability might end up scattered over the next couple of weeks depending on how long the person ahead of me takes to read a book. If I re-read something familiar during the wait, then I'm ok dropping it partway through (since I already know how it will turn out) if one or more of the new books on hold becomes available. |

I don't think I can afford a lot of re-reading because life is short, books are too many and my TBR list is running in four figures.
![]() Still, seriously speaking, after every few months, I tend to re-read some of Erle Stanley Gardner or Agatha Christie or James Hadley Chase's novels. I feel so comfortable and homely with them, after having read very many different authors and different subjects in the meantime. This is an exercise to calm down my head, in a way, just like meeting some old friend. Quote:

Definitely. I'm going to re-read the Mitch Rapp series up to The Survivor, as I read them 2 years ago and can't remember enough of the previous books to properly enjoy the newest one.

Ah, but I'm rereading those old favorites in ebook format. Haven't read a paper book other than a program manual or how to book (find photoshop, programming and html format books easier to work with in paper format for some reason) in almost 10 years

There's a series of books I'd love to reread. But every time I think: Now I'll start, I won't because I really don't want to read those hardcovers I have in my personal library!

You have me curious, what series is it that isn't available in e-book format that you want to read?

Usually, I have to wait a few years to re-read something, long enough to have forgotten most, if not all of the details.
But I do often get into the frame of mind that I'd rather re-read something I considered great than take a chance on being disappointed in something new to me. (I don't mean "great literature" but what I thought was a great story or great characters). |

Whenever a new instalment in one of my favourite series comes out, I like to "get into the mood" by re-reading the earlier books.
In the case of Wheel of Time, that was 13 books. For the Dresden Files, it is 15 so far. A Song of Ice and Fire (if a new book ever will come out) does not have so many books, but lots of more pages.... |

I am in the minority here. I hardly reread anything. In fact, I just consume new books. All the books I have read in my lifetime I haven't had the inclination to read again. Maybe I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier or Corduroy a children's book. But nothing as of late has been interesting enough for me to reread.

That's one of the draws of eReaders I think. You can access the classics that you read years ago and build a good collection of such books in addition to adding new books by new authors to your collection and still not run out of storage space.
