There are two separate functions: Auto-SLEEP and Auto-POWER OFF. I have it SLEEP after 15 minutes and NEVER power off, so it's just a quick press to wake it even 2 or 3 days later (rare, but it happens occasionally). As others have said the difference between fully powered down and sleep is really small. Unless you're leaving it for a couple of months don't worry about it.

Back to my questions: So there is no new method to modify that timer?

There is a `Custom Sleep/Power-off timeouts` firmware patch that allows the timeouts to be changed, but only up to a maximum of about 4 hours. (That is just a limitation of the patch, not of the firmware as far as I know.)

I don't know what happens if you just change the AutoOffMinutes value in the device's config file.

There was some discussion on it a while ago. The sleep and power off settings are stored as numbers in the config file. In each case, it is the number of minutes. The was some discussion on this some time ago. I did some experimenting and, from memory, I could set it to something like 240 minutes. I think someone looked a patching this, but they couldn't do any better than this.

I have AutoOffMinutes = 250 on mine now.
I suspect 255 is the maximum, not sure why I tried 250 (although another 5 minutes wouldn't make that much difference anyway).

If I'm not mistaken, with the current firmware, if you set this by editing the config file on the device, the next time you change settings on the screen that lists this setting, I think it resets it back to the UI defaults, and you have to edit it again. Older firmwares left it alone.
