I think the most extreme sport I've participated in lately is wheeling my trash can to the curb....on an icy day, down a slight downward angle....I should have had ski poles!

For some reason Visual Ping did not ping me this time to let me know of a new Alexander Street classical music freebie of the week. I thought to check their website earlier today, and found out about their new freebie. It's probably been up a day or two; but no worries, that still leaves you several days to see this post and go to their website to download the parts that you want.

This week the freebie is Symphony No. 1 in C Minor by Johannes Brahms. "This recording is performed by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine under the direction of Alain Lombard." Here's the webpage where you can access the download. You do not have to login--just click on the blue download button and you'll be taken to another webpage that will let you what to do next. You may remember that Alexander Street kindly provides both the MP3 and WMA formats of their free downloads of the week. I listened to all of the movements (4 of them) in both of the formats. I detected no issues. Well, other than the fact that they are by Brahm. ha. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-25-2016 at 01:52 AM. |

I went through a huge dry spell, then with the deluge this weekend went from about $2 in credits to nearly $9. I am quite pleased as there is a game that I've been wanting that is $10 and I just haven't been able to justify spending a chunk of my book budget on a single game.

Google Play has the Goo Goo Dolls' Greatest Hits Volume One--The Singles album on sale for only 99 cents.

From Freebase under Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY, via Google Play: Greatest Hits Volume One: The Singles is the eleventh album by The Goo Goo Dolls and is a greatest hits album containing fourteen previously released tracks, including their newest, "Before It's Too Late", from the Transformers motion picture. The album also contains a newly recorded version of their first hit single, "Name". The album was released on November 13, 2007. This album marks a milestone for the band. They have been together for 21 years, and this is their first greatest hits album. The follow-up compilation, Vol.2, was released on August 19, 2008, consisting of rarities, B-sides, covers and a DVD of music videos and live performances. Volume One debuted at number 33 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling about 33,000 copies in its first week. The album is also an embodiment of the grown presence of John Rzeznik as the dominant vocalist as every song on it is sung by him, though both he and Robby Takac are "lead" vocalists of the band. This is an outstanding rock band, and an almost unbelievably low price for this great album. Get it here. Thank you, Google Play, for all of the fantastic music deals that you give us. I've been pinged . . . .

But it didn't hurt, though. I was pinged by VisualPing, letting me know that there's a new free classical music download available at Classical-music.com.It's Domenico Scarlatti's Sonata in G minor, performed by Angela Hewitt. Here's more info: This week's free download is Domenico Scarlatti's Sonata in G minor, performed by Angela Hewitt in a recent recording on Hyperion. Scarlatti, born in 1685 - the same year as both Bach and Handel, wrote 550 or so keyboard sonatas during his lifetime. Hewitt responds 'intuitively and alluringly to the multi-faceted characters of these sonatas' writes Nicholas Anderson, BBC Music Magazine March 2016. 'At one moment she is exposing their raw, percussive elements...the next drawing us into an altogether more intimate world with tender inflections.' By now you probably know the drill necessary to get the freebie: navigate to Classical-music.com's free download webpage. If you're not logged in, go do that. Then, return to the webpage whose URL I gave above. You then should see a red "download now" button on top of the thumbnail of the album. Click on it. I listened to the 4 1/2 minute track all the way through and detected no issues with the audio quality. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-30-2016 at 01:03 AM. |

Download a free award-winning educational (I hope that writing that didn't scare anyone away. ha) film from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, called The Double Helix.

Here's the blurb: James Watson and Francis Crick collected and interpreted key evidence to determine that DNA molecules take the shape of a twisted ladder—a double helix. The film presents the challenges, false starts, and eventual success of their bold chase, culminating in the classic 1953 publication in Nature on the structure of DNA. Watson relates what those early days in the Cavendish Laboratory were like, including his friendship with Crick and their shared ambition and passion. Rarely seen archival footage is combined with interviews with some of today’s leading scientists to bring this landmark discovery and all of its implications to life. I have watched it, and found it to be easy to understand and to have a great balance of scientific (chemistry, mainly) and historical information. It is 16 minutes, 53 seconds long. You can download the film in English in a variety of formats: HD (M4V), HD (WMV), SD (M4V), and SD (WMV). Additionally, you may download a PDF transcript of the film. Here's the link. |
