It rained again. My lawn is flooded.
I'd like to be able to mow my lawn just once before July. Is that too much to ask? |

It's a laptop not a desktop. Remapping the key should be easier than adding more things to confuse her with. She's 76 and very non techy. She does Facebook and that's it.

SharpKeys download (from CodePlex)
SharpKeys explanation SharpKeys is a small open source program. You can remap a key, and it saves the remap in the Windows registry. Reboot the computer, and the key is remapped. You may even be able to uninstall SharpKeys after the remap was done, but I don't know for sure. I didn't test this, but it could be that SharpKeys removes the remap upon de-installation. Even if you'd leave it installed, it's not in the way. My personal suggestion would be to remap Backspace to either Insert (on the Insert/Delete/Home/End/PageUp/PageDown block, if available), or the Scroll Lock key. I never used those in my life. The layouts done with it are. I installed the layout I made with it (Polish special characters incorporated into German kbd layout) on machines running win8+ too. The program is used to modify the mapping files windows itself provides. But I have checked now - the creator itself doesn't work with 8+
You need to run it on an older version to build the layout but once you have made the dll setup package it 'll install fine on 8+ machines. |

Second the suggestion of Sharp Keys. It's absolutely painless to use and can be undone in seconds after you replace her keyboard. Which, on a laptop, is trivial and inexpensive.

The keyboards are at least available during the life of the laptop, which is at least 5 years; often they are available much longer. I can still get a keyboard for my 7.5 year old Dell E6500. A backlit US-International keyboard for that laptop costs €47 (refurbished) or €99 (new), and I can have it on the next day if ordered before 22:00. It replaces within 5 minutes. (I had to do this once after a key broke. Dell replaced that board under warranty.) I have seen laptops though (from more than one manufacturer) for which is was impossible to get parts after the warranty term. One of those was the HP Pavilion DV9000. (That laptop had a myriad of problems if I ever saw one.) Introduced in september 2006, sold until september 2007, three year warranty maximum, so you'd possibly have warranty until november 2010 if you had one of the very latest. In 2011, it was almost impossible to get parts for that laptop, besides a new hard drive or memory, at least in the Netherlands. Other manufacturers are not very much better with consumer laptops. Other laptops may still have parts, but I have seen systems that have to be taken apart halfway to replace a keyboard or a hard drive. Last edited by Katsunami; 05-22-2016 at 12:38 PM. |

My tablet died, again. The first time was just weeks after the first year of warranty expired, but the store I bought it from had it repaired. It died again a couple of months later, which is about a year ago. I don't think I can get it repaired for free again and I don't think a tablet that's over two years old and has been repaired twice is worth the repair fees.
So I'm now looking for a new tablet. I like the look of the Asus Zenpad S 8.0. It's a bit bigger than the two Google Nexus 7 tablets I've had, but it should be small enough to carry around. I think I'll wait with getting a new tablet until after my vacation. I can get by with my phone until then. |

Rant coming...
I am the mother to a soon to be four year old. I noticed this trend when I was pregnant and it has only gotten worse. Hospitals with birthing/breastfeeding agendas are pissing me off. When I gave birth I wanted to breast feed. I understand that it is the best alternative for a baby. I wasn't producing any milk and my baby was losing weight. After three days and working with lactations, I had a team of nurses come in my room and harass me because I was not feeding my son often enough and he was losing weight and hungry. The lactation nurses knew that we had a good latch and that we were making an effort, I wasn't producing anything. It took the Pediatrician handing me formula and saying there was nothing wrong with supplementing breast milk with formula to stop the insanity. I probably should have gone down that path earlier but C-section recovery and then hormones and sleep deprivation and I was not at the top of my game. Little Man breast feed and used formula and did just fine. But why the lactation staff never suggested formula when they knew I was feeding him regularly and he was losing weight is beyond me. And I am not the only one with a similar story. Now I have a friend who had to be induced in week 37 for health reasons and ended up in labor for 96 hours and having the baby born with forceps, risky, because it was too late for a C-Section. She asked about a C-Section at three different times because she was not dilating and other issues were arising. But the hospital was so intent on a vaginal birth that they kept pressuring her not to have a C-Section. All the sudden she went from not dilated to 6 cm. 96 hours of freaking labor and then a risky delivery because they did not want to do a C Section at 52 hours (when they moved to a fourth induction drug). You would love to say that the patient can be more demanding but when you are giving freaking birth and in pain and stressed and hormonal you are not at your best. And when your spouse is in labor and at the hospital it is pretty hard to say you are changing hospitals when you feel the hospital is pressuring you. I get it, vaginal birth and breast feeding is best. Got it. But it is not always feasible. Far more women then you know cannot produce enough breast milk to feed a baby. There are times when C Sections are necessary. Can the world please stop trying to force the perfect method down peoples throats? Just ugggghhh. Look, I don't want women having C Sections because they are more convenient for the Doctor. I understand that the C Section rate has jumped and that there are some silly reasons for that but to pressure women into a, in the long run, risky vaginal delivery when there are a multitude of signs that a C Section is needed over a period of time is ridiculous. Pregnancy is hard enough without people forcing an agenda on women. I read far too many posts on how awful it is that women are using formula. And how no one should suffer a C Section. Stop freaking questioning and judging my birthing experience people. UUGGGHHHH Oh, and my friend with the forcep delivery, is struggling to produce enough breast milk. She knows my story so started supplementing right away. And her baby needs to have a surgery on his tongue so he can latch properly. Guess how thrilled the medical staff was when she started using formula? |

I have no informed medical opinion, Prof, but It sure sounds like you're right.
Did you and your friend go to the same hospital? Maybe the maternity staff there needs to retire. Your story makes me appreciate the way our hospital handled my wife and our two kids. They didn't act like yours! |
