For example, it seems likely that a typical usage pattern of an Oasis (certainly mine) would involve the device battery undergoing frequent top-up charges (being returned to the case between reading sessions) after partial discharges, rather than deep discharge/recharge cycles - this usage pattern will help prolong the battery life. There are also other design factors which affect the battery lifetime - limiting discharge and recharge currents, trading off capacity vs. lifetime by restricting maximum charge levels etc. etc.

I do own an Oasis and I do like it very much but I also have concerns about the battery -- not its distant future but its present. I've done several tests now, all under similar conditions, and the reading times I got were all distinctly different, ranging from just over two and a half hours to just under six hours. I can live with that but I'd be a lot happier if I knew that it was normal battery behavior rather than a sign of imminent demise. I suppose it doesn't really matter; if it gets worse over the next year I guess Amazon will replace it. I'm sorry if my battery obsession comes across as hostility. |

I am one of the battery obsessed myself. At least in the past I have been. I cannot even tell how long the oasis lasts out the cover, I can't measure it. It keeps topping off in the cover so it never runs out. So for me the oasis without the cover does not have a separate battery life in my real life using conditions. I measure the battery for the package. I read, put it in the cover in between, tops it off, I continue reading. I have a really long reading session at like 4 hours or so and still had almsot half the battery. Wifi on and using wiki and dictionary and store a lot during that. But again, its not a measurable thing for me overall as I put the 2 parts together during the day, all the time so I get about 5 days of reading with hours of reading each day. I had some reading sessions in the past of 6 hours straight, but my bladder can't handle that anymore I don't think . |

My review of the Oasis, posted on May 1: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...09#post3309409 And I'm not the only one. Other Oasis owners have chimed in with "Useful Information" (as you put it, in all caps), but they are often dismissed and drowned out by negativity. ETA: Sorry, I mispoke, it wasn't "all caps," but rather an unusual use of initial caps. I agree. I answer questions about the Oasis with great hesitation. The Oasis is not a perfect device, and it's not for everyone. But some of us like it, and when we say that, we seem to become targets. Last edited by odamizu; 05-22-2016 at 02:27 PM.

People ask questions all the time on MR & usually they get answers but not with the oasis.

I'm surprised at how much I like it. Its pictures don't do it justice. I was hesitant about ordering it because I haven't had great luck with Kindle screens but this one is very good, the best I've seen. I've also always had a problem with the limited font sizes on my Kindles. I always wanted something between the fourth and fifth sizes. The Oasis screen is so good that I'm fine with the fourth size. I've always wondered how people managed to hold on to their ereaders without covers. I'm a weakling and a klutz -- ereaders just seem to want to fly out of my hands. The Oasis is so light and well-balanced that I'm actually able to hold it in one hand without the cover. People have mentioned being bothered by the asymmetry of it but in person it seems like a logical way for it to be. I think I've spent about enough time obsessing about the batteries. |

Frequent top up charges make a small difference. Three partial charges of 33%, for instance, together make up one single 100% cycle. Charge cycles are going to be used up, no matter what the distribution.
