I specifically said "reading books". The "reading" in that survey includes newspapers, magazines, etc. Most people do not read books.

I finally just plugged it in when I left the house and it was fully charged again when I came back an hour later.

I managed to empty the cover in 3 days.

2 months battery life
I probably got a lemon and will need to swap it out. Every fifteen minutes to half hour it tells me that the charging cover is not connected correctly. I wondered if my grip was sliding the cover apart, but I sometimes get the message when it's sitting on a flat surface.

But where do you get it from?

23 % didn't read a book past year, according to another source.

Thank you - I stand corrected.

I still maintain, though, that it's without doubt the case that the average MR member reads an awful lot more than the average member of the general population. For example, Waterstones (by far the largest B&M bookseller in the UK) class as a "heavy reader" anyone who buys more than 6 books a year. We have many people on MR who buy (and read) double that number every month!

You said that you ran out the battery in 3 days of reading. How many hours were you reading, approximately?

But, "not charging correctly" doesn't sound right, so perhaps you should talk to customer service.

I don't think those people are buying the oasis.

I don't think people who pay $290 for an e-ink reader are average in any sense. In fact, they are a minority even on MR.

So that 30mins a day is like the "serving size" on your Doritos bag -- only loosely connected to reality

"2 months" vs "3 days" is how *all* of the kindles are, so this is no different (not that you said it was). They pick some "per day reading rate" and then standardize the time measurements to that. But since people likely to spend $290+ on an ereader are most likely to be the avid readers ..... 30 minutes winds up being a ridiculous comparison time frame! I only get 3-4 days of "full weekend days" reading on my Voyage too. Which is to say ... I do laundry, I eat, I walk the dog, but there are a lot of hours of reading on those days. Sounds like the Oasis is not noticeably different -- though they claim an hour or two more (spread out over their silly 30-minutes a day rate).
Yep ... I'm a binge reader On days I work 12 hour shifts I can only read when I'm eating - arrgh! Depending on my days off and how busy I am I might only get 1 hour, or I might get 4 hours of reading in. If it's a really great book I might just say heck with it and read all day in between chores and buy the next book in the series and continue. Right now I'm in a Masters class - research study (busy work research - yuk!) so I will be having to write monster papers too. Thus my reading might have to decrease some. Then in September-ish I will be in my practicum and I probably won't do any reading for 5 weeks since I have to work full time and get 150 hours in with a director at work (super yuk for being at work 7 days a week- 3 - 12hr shifts and 4 - 8 hr shifts each week - the actual time with the director will be great if I can keep my eyeballs open).

I think it was my post he was quoting about the 3 days ... hmmm idk, maybe 3 or 4 hours each day ... just a guess because it wasn't all at one time. I had to break it up to do things. It was right before I had to start school again after a 2 week break so I was trying to fit "everything" in life in all at once - LOL!

You know, chores, reading, computer, computer games, video games, more chores, basically pretending to be 12 when I'm not for a few days
My 11 year old loved it!

Now real life is back. Only two classes left though!

I live in AZ ... it's so hot outside my mom didn't care if I read all day. But, we only went to the mall once in a while and we were in the middle of the desert and that was the only way to get books when I was little. So ... I re-read a lot, got up before dawn to walk the dog for miles, and spent a lot of time in the swimming pool.

I was in heaven when my brother got his first job ... in a bookstore! He got all kinds of books and I could raid him any time I wanted. He also brought home the books that were overstock and had the covers torn off - which I also read. Isn't that nasty - you would think the store would have donated them to charity, or schools,or something instead of tearing the cover off to send back to the publisher. I understand why and all but it's just irritating to destroy something like that. My brother would bring home one of each for us to read. Most likely a bit illegal though.

I'm in awe of people like yourself that can do all that and still make time to read, I have to struggle to get thru a book, I like reading it's just finding the time to do it.
