They can probably be replaced if the cases can be opened. There is a trend nowadays to make a case out of two parts, and then glue the parts shut so no screws are necessary. It can make a device a milimeter or two thinner. Maybe they did that with the Oasis, maybe not. I don't know.

P.S.

I think the best thing about the Oasis is NO ONE IS FORCING ANYONE TO BUY IT! It's totally optional! Not mandatory! If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it! That's why Amazon offers 3 other Kindles! You don't even have to buy a Kindle! Hate Amazon? Buy a Kobo or other brand! Choice is a wonderful thing. Now, back to reading on my Oasis ... ![]() ----------------------------- P.S. Apologies to those who respect that the Oasis has its merits, even if it's not for you. This rant and show of temper is not directed at you. Last edited by odamizu; 05-22-2016 at 07:59 PM. |

I think most of this is Amazon's fault. I buy Kindles (as well as other brands of ereaders) and I'm already very attached to the Oasis but I think Amazon is arrogant and stubborn and it annoys me enough that I almost hate buying Kindles.
I'm annoyed that after all these years and all these generations and all the improvement in screen resolution there are still only eight font sizes and few other ways to customize the look of the pages in books. I'm annoyed that their quality control is so lacking that hoping for a good screen is like buying a lottery ticket. I'm annoyed, and also worried, that there is so little information provided about the split battery system on the Oasis. Neither the product page nor the user guide has one word about how the split battery works -- the conditions under which the cover will recharge the Oasis, and the amount of reading time to expect from a fully charged onboard battery (not even the weeks-at-half-hour-a-day ad-speak). Saying that it works as it's designed to work doesn't seem very sensible to me; we don't yet know either how it was designed to work or how it does work. Well, I'm glad to get all that off my chest. ![]() |

I read about 6-7 hours with the built-in battery of the Oasis before I have to recharge it. So 500 charges with a minimum of 6 hours reading time give me about 3000 hours of reading. Simple math tells me, that I could read 1 hour a day for the next 8.22 years. Or 2 hours a day for the next 4.11 years. If the battery lasts 1000 charges, you can double the values. That is a lot of reading time! I'm pretty sure I will own the next generation Kindle before the battery of the Oasis will be running out. ![]() |

I don't do reviews, period. Rarely do I review things I purchase. Just not my thing. I think there are lots of info bits, better than reviews, in all the Oasis threads by those that own it. |

I'm a little puzzled by your remarks, Katie. Many people who've bought an Oasis have posted their opinions of it.

Let's use 500 charge cycles although it is likely to be greatly in excess of that. Relevant fact A. 6 hours. 500 charge cycles. 3,000 hours, at 30 mins per day, 6,000 days. It's over16 YEARS!!! Relevant fact B. If you read for 6 hours a day (greatly exceeding the design parameters and claims (non-Amazon) for the device) then you get 500 days. Should the battery ONLY give you 500 charge cycles, the battery will begin to dimish slowly over another 500 charge cycles. So for A, let's say you'll get 10,000 days and then the battery ceases to hold a meningful charge. Well, who cares. It's a very long time. So for B, you've still had exactly the same reading time out of the battery if you call its life two years. Therefore, if you read 6 hours a day every day then maybe you may, and I emphasise may, wish to consider a different device if you realistically consider your reading timeis that significant. So there are facts. When these facts are applied to the Real World(tm) are they relevant. Application of relevancy will give you a rational answer and prevent pontless outrage. For the "normal" reader the screen battery life is totaly irrelevant as a very simple calculation tells you it is more than adequate and will likely outlive the device. For the heavy reader then the application of quiet plain common sense should prevail and not wild assertions. Fact: Caffeine is a diuretic. Irrelevant apple tree logic assertion: If you drink a cup of coffee it will dehydrate you. |

Perhaps you like the device, and you'd like to replace the battery when it dies, rather than buy a new reader. There's a market in third-party replacement batteries for all Kindles. Some models are easy to change the battery, others (where everything is glued together) less so.
