![]() Maybe Kindle batteries have always been variable, even within the same model, just like the frontlit screens are. I never really tested any of mine because they always seemed perfectly fine for my purposes. Now with the new split battery concept the onboard Oasis battery is limited enough that I've been paying attention to it. I'm going to stop that pretty soon so I don't drive myself or the Oasis crazy. ![]() |

I had the Paperwhite 1, and now the pw3. The great thing about the Paperwhite is that it has been improved upon so much, screen, storage. and no increase in price. This gives me hope for the Oasis, I'm hoping that they will improve as much as they did for Paperwhites. This is the first Oasis, no doubt it won't be the last. Although it will take a while to get there.

I would respectfully suggest that there is considerable doubt! The Paperwhite is the exception in having gone through multiple iterations. Most Kindle models have had only one version, and have then been replaced. Consider the Voyage, for example.

Although the Voyage has yet to be discontinued (this is yet to be seen), it has not gone through a second 'iteration' - and may never do so.

Even if someone else comes out with a different cover that can also hold a battery, you have to buy the original cover along with the reader, and then not use it. That makes for a hugely expensive reader that adds very few things if anything compared to a Voyage, or even a KPW3. |

That's true Harry T. I guess we have to wait and see. The separate batteries on the Oasis is different from any other Kindle so far.

Sad is IF the Oasis crashes you not just lose the device you lose the Cover..... IF the cover crashes you loose the battery. Either way its a no win situation.

Its not really difficult. It is a combo, period. Used together to get the best of both, lightness, ergonomics and length of battery. I am getting exactly that. The device part of the combo has not run out of batter for me. And I read hours a day. Why would one pay $300 for something they want to only use one part of the design. Doesn't make sense. You'd get a PW or Voyage if that is how you want to use it, not a Oasis. I get that some folks don't like the design, its not for everyone. But that is why there is a lineup of kindles. You pick the one that fits best with what you desire from a reader. I charge my Oasis combo every 5 days right now, my Voyage I had to charge every 3-4 days on average. |

I see another potential problem with the Oasis and cover battery. The built-in battery of the Oasis is, as I recall, 250 mAh compared to 1420 mAh for the Paperwhite. A lithium ion battery typically will last through between 500 and 1000 charges.
The problem that concerns me is that reading the Oasis without it's cover will use up that little battery almost 6 times faster than reading on a Paperwhite, leaving a very expensive paperweight. If the cover is on while reading there might be a better situation if the device runs off the cover battery and not the internal battery. I think I read somewhere that that's the way it works but I don't recall where I read it and I can't find it again so I'm just not sure. Anyway if that is the way it works, if reading it in the cover uses only the cover's battery as long as the internal battery is charged, that means it will probably be a long lived device as long as you leave the cover on. On the other hand if it always runs off the internal battery and the cover just keeps that charged, the Oasis is doomed to an early death. Just as it would be if you read it out of the cover all the time. I have no way of knowing for sure which of these is the true situation and I find it difficult to believe that Amazon didn't think of this, but I guess that's possible. They don't miss much but things happen. Anyway, I'm not buying an Oasis until I know more about this and if I already had one I'd keep it in the cover to try to protect it as much as possible. This is a scary situation. I did send some feedback to Amazon and hopefully they'll let me or everyone know something about this. It looks to me like a pretty nice device but right now I'm afraid of it and I think it's something Amazon needs to explain. Barry |

Although I don't own one (yet), I fully understand the design. I can't help but laugh at those who think it is 'crippled'. I would humbly suggest that it is designed exactly the way Amazon wanted it to be designed - a fully functional and mature ebook reader. ![]() ![]() |

If the reader had been designed for use in the cover all of the time, it wouldn't have had its own battery. It could have been built as a reader/cover in such a way that the cover wouldn't even be detachable.

I can't help but laugh at referring to it as an expensive paperweight. At 4.6 oz I wouldn't count on it to hold down much.

I think the fact that the Cover Cant be Charge without being on the reader is going to prove the be a fatal flaw in the long run. Amazon advertise it to be Read without the cover. Yet the battery life is Mainly in the cover ... How many charges can the cover give the device Before they are both dead? How long does it take to Charge them? As Berryman pointed out How long before they both wont charge at all? Then what another $$300 to replace it? I betting Amazon not going to replace them. Look how their Return & replacement policies have changed in the past couple of years. Use to be IF the Device failed They would replace it with New. Now you are lucky if you get a Use Replacement.

I always have a laugh at those who have a laugh at others and then go on to make a 'humble' sugestion. That's false humility and not a desirable virtue.
