I'm not discouraging you from purchasing or reading the book, but I do feel that it is important to make you aware of his viewpoint about Jesus. What he says in the book surely is going to reflect that viewpoint. To express that point more colloquially, I felt that it was important for anyone interested in the book to know where Crossan "was coming from." If I had made that post in the Politics and Religion forum, it would not have been seen by most of the people following this thread, who potentially might be interested in the information therein; therefore, I felt that it was appropriate to post it on this thread. If TrevorViking shares his opinion of the Crossan-Wright book as I suggested that he do, perhaps he can post it in the Politics and Religion forum, and make a short post to that effect on this thread. Likewise, I will do the same if and when I can find the audio of the Crossan debate, which debate I now remember was with William Lane Craig. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-18-2016 at 05:22 PM. |

GtrsRGr8 I appreciated knowing where that writer was "coming from", so that I would know whether or not I would like the book.

You also seem to misunderstand Crossan's personal theology, since Crossan certainly does not think that Jesus was a mere, ordinary man. Crossan does believe that Jesus was mortal, which is clearly not orthodox theology, but he does believe that Jesus was used as an instrument of God's revelation. His book (other than this one) that most captures his theological position is Who Is Jesus. It's not available as an ebook, but it is still in print. You can read the introduction at Crossan's website. Quote:

Be Transformed (John 13-21): Christ's Triumph Means Your Transformation (The BE Series Commentary) by Warren W. Wiersbe
How to pray, how to serve, how to overcome, how to love: Jesus taught the disciples these timeless lessons through hands-on experience and powerful parables that resonated in the hearts of multitudes. Most evident in John 13-21, however, is Christ's teaching on the transforming power of joy-how to have it, hold onto it, and never let it go. Get a free ebook, What's Your Worldview, by James N. Anderson. All you have to do to get it is to complete a survey, which probably will take you less than 5 minutes to complete.
The ebook will be available to you in PDF, mobi, and ePub. I tested it, and found that you can get copies in all three formats, if you so wish. The Kindle mobi sells at Amazon for $7.98, so this is a valuable offer. Here's the book description from Amazon: How do you view the world? It’s a big question. And how you answer is one of the most important things about you. Not sure what you’d say? Join James Anderson on an interactive journey of discovery aimed at helping you understand and evaluate the options when it comes to identifying your worldview. Cast in the mold of a classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” story, What’s Your Worldview? will guide you toward finding intellectually satisfying answers to life’s biggest questions—equipping you to think carefully about not only what you believe but why you believe it and how it impacts the rest of your life. Here's where to go to complete the survey and get your free ebook. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-24-2016 at 11:05 PM. |

$1.99 (83% Off)--Memoir of Woman Raised in Christian Science.
That is, 83% off of the digital list price.
fathermothergod [sic]: My Journey Out of Christian Science. By Lucia Greenhouse. Rated 4.2 stars, from 113 reviews at the present moment at Amazon. Print list price $15.00; digital list price $11.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Broadway Books, publisher. 321 pages. https://www.amazon.com/fathermotherg.../dp/B004J4WLH8. Book Description Lucia Ewing had what looked like an all-American childhood. She lived with her mother, father, sister, and brother in an affluent suburb of Minneapolis, where they enjoyed private schools, sleep-away camps, a country club membership, and skiing vacations. Surrounded by a tight-knit extended family, and doted upon by her parents, Lucia had no doubt she was loved and cared for. But when it came to accidents and illnesses, Lucia’s parents didn't take their kids to the doctor's office--they prayed, and called a Christian Science practitioner. fathermothergod is Lucia Greenhouse's story about growing up in Christian Science, in a house where you could not be sick, because you were perfect; where no medicine, even aspirin, was allowed. As a teenager, her visit to an ophthalmologist created a family crisis. She was a sophomore in college before she had her first annual physical. And in December 1985, when Lucia and her siblings, by then young adults, discovered that their mother was sick, they came face-to-face with the reality that they had few--if any--options to save her. Powerless as they watched their mother’s agonizing suffering, Lucia and her siblings struggled with their own grief, anger, and confusion, facing scrutiny from the doctors to whom their parents finally allowed them to turn, and stinging rebuke from relatives who didn’t share their parents’ religious values. In this haunting, beautifully written book, Lucia pulls back the curtain on the Christian Science faith and chronicles its complicated legacy for her family. At once an essentially American coming-of-age story and a glimpse into the practices of a religion few really understand, fathermothergod is an unflinching exploration of personal loss and the boundaries of family and faith. R.C. Sproul Title on the Relationship between Church and State. FREE!
This ebook was marked down a few months ago, if not more recently--books in the series that this one is in are frequently marked down. However, I don't remember this one, at least, being posted recently, at least. This ebook is very highly rated, as are all, I think, in the series.
What Is the Relationship between Church and State? (Crucial Questions Series Book 19). By R.C. Sproul. Rated 4.3 stars, but from only 11 reviews at the present moment, at Amazon; rated 4.13, from 67 reviews, at GoodReads. Print list price $2.50; digital list price N/A; Kindle price now $0.00. Reformation Trust Publishing, publisher. 56 pages. https://www.amazon.com/Relationship-...dp/B00M0ACC5Y/. Book Description From the very beginning of Christianity, the relationship between the church and the state has been a matter of great concern. The issue remains confusing and contentious for many Christians today, as issues of political activism, religious freedom, and civil disobedience confront those seeking to understand this crucial relationship. Here Dr. R.C. Sproul examines the relationship by looking at the nature and mission of government, how Christians should view and relate to their governments, the legitimacy of state-established churches, how to deal with abuses of power, and the legitimacy of civil disobedience.
