I really enjoyed these books when they came out, though it's been a long time so I don't know whether they'd stand the test of time. Hambly seems to be somewhat forgotten these days, which is a shame since at a time when most fantasy authors were imitating Tolkien she was regularly challenging conventions of the genre and coming up with original stories with protagonists you could actually relate to.

Venture Press, a science fiction and fantasy imprint of Endeavour Press,
The Sisterhood by Juanita Coulson originally published as `Star Sister' by Ballantine in 1990 Renee Amos, member of the Social Outreach Sisterhood, is dedicated to righting wrongs and championing underdogs. Never in her wildest dreams would she imagine the existence of an alien world; especially an alien world fighting for justice. Driving back from a council hearing, Renee finds herself amidst two alien Arbiters who are on their way to an alien world to negotiate a peace treaty. Under attack and with no other choice, the Arbiters retreat, taking Renee with them. Suddenly she finds herself in a strange world, with human-like creatures speaking a foreign language. Ordered to wear a pendant to help her understand their language, Renee realises this world also needs to fight for justice. Soon it becomes clear that her experience from her mission on earth is invaluable to these alien people, and with no way of getting back to earth, she has no choice but to join the Arbiter's mission. This is her home now ... she must become one of them ... However, years of advocating pacifism has not prepared her for the tooth-and-nail battles and interstellar politics. With the entire star system under the threat of destruction and with her home planet, Earth, directly in the line of fire, Renee has no choice but to kill ... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01631MJS0/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01631MJS0/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01631MJS0/ |

Thanks for that. Glad to see that JC is being transferred to Kindle. A pity that many others from that era haven't been yet - which means I can't downsize the library by much.

American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition: A Novel
by Neil Gaiman is $2.99 at Kobo: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...dition-a-novel Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/American-Gods...al-text&sr=1-1 Below is the blurb: First published in 2001, American Gods became an instant classic—an intellectual and artistic benchmark from the multiple-award-winning master of innovative fiction, Neil Gaiman. Now discover the mystery and magic of American Gods in this tenth anniversary edition. Newly updated and expanded with the author’s preferred text, this commemorative volume is a true celebration of a modern masterpiece by the one, the only, Neil Gaiman. A storm is coming . . . Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life. But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself. Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined—it is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbors secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path. Relevant and prescient, American Gods has been lauded for its brilliant synthesis of “mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World) and as a modern phantasmagoria that “distills the essence of America” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is, quite simply, an outstanding work of literary imagination that will endure for generations. |

Walter Jon Williams Hardwired is .99 pretty much everywhere in the US.
Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Hardwired-Com.../dp/B005O5VR3U Kobo: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...complete-novel Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/90129 I haven't read it since it was new, but it's a pretty good book that got me started on Walter Jon Williams. He says he has never put it on sale before because it sells anyway, but doing it now to get new people to check him out and hopefully read more. If you do like it, check out the Praxis books, because I want him to write more and if he sells more it's more likely to happen. Here's the blurb: Earth lies prostrate beneath the lash of the Orbital powers, and Earth’s Balkanized nations have no choice but to let the Orbitals plunder their remaining wealth. Below the zone of Orbital control, buttonheads, panzerjocks, dirtgirls, and hustlers scramble for their ticket out of the gravity well. But now, if the criminal underworld and the guerilla underground can join forces, there is a chance to shift the balance of power— in a war fought on the ground by hardwired commandos, in the air by high-flying deltajocks, and by genius hackers in the neural interface. As Roger Zelazny said, “Hardwired” is a tough, sleek juggernaut of a story, punctuated by strobe light movements, coursing to the wail of jets and the twang of steel guitars— glittering, nasty, and noble— and told in a style perfectly suiting its content. It has all of my favorite things— blood, love, fire, hate and a high ideal or two. I wish I’d written this one.” Last edited by Ginwen; 05-17-2016 at 11:53 AM. |

Metal and Magic: A Fantasy Journey
Amazon US A free (for now at least) collection of six fantasy novels. One of the books "DIXXON - Teen Witch by Steve Windsor and Lise Carter" is referenced in Steve Windsor's book writing series and they put up a pair of youtube videos about their process of brainstorming the story as well. So not only do you get the story but if you have the books by Steve Windsor and have seen the videos you can follow along from start to finish and see what their brainstorming led to. An extra bonus if you are trying to write yourself. ![]() |

Hounded (Iron Druid 1) by Kevin Hearne is £1.99 at Amazon UK today. It's a publisher price, so I imagine it will be the same at other vendors.
I guess this means there's a new round of promo prices from Orbit, but I don't know what the others are. That was the only one on my wishlist. |

X-link to the DRM-free megathread for the new Humble Bundle:
Humble Book Bundle Murder & Mystery presented by Open Road Media chock full of backlist mystery/thriller novels which includes a couple of sfnal technothriller offerings from Greg Bear (ISFDB, Wikipedia) and William Shatner (if you're reading this thread, you know exactly who he is), which may be worth it if the rest of the bundle holds appeal. |

The Long Earth - Pratchett/Baxter Magician - Feist Pawn of Prophecy - Eddings Blood Song - Anthony Ryan Wool - Hugh Howey Theft of Swords - Michael J Sullivan Queen of the Tearling - Erika Johansen and others. I did check the Kevin Hearne on Kobo yesterday, and it was discounted, so I expect all the trad pub books are discounted everywhere. |
