I wanted ePub (for my PocketBook reader). I also wanted to avoid dealing with a different DRM system, if possible.

Have you checked the Kobo store?

I hadn't checked the Kobo store, because I was under the impression that they had their own proprietary DRM. Do they use ADE for epubs? Anyway, I searched for "Yankee Privateer" and didn't find it there.

Kobo uses their own format with their own DRM to download to their devices and apps. But, they also have the ePub version for direct download from their store.

You could buy the Kindle version. Trivial to convert Kindle format to ePub.

It's also available to borrow from openlibrary.org https://openlibrary.org/books/OL6174...nkee_privateer

I'm surprised it's not on Kobo yet, since it's on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and openlibrary.org

I understand. I have calibre and ADE and the plugin for Google Play ebooks, and even installed the Kindle app in preparation for buying Kindle versions, and then the wind went out of my sails. I hate the idea of DRM to start with, and the thought of paying for an ebook and then jumping through new hoops to convert it leaves me cold. Acquiring books is usually a pleasure in itself, but having to learn the different ways of de-DRMing them has turned it into a chore for me. I have a large TBR pile, so it doesn't take much to turn me off buying an ebook.

Just got a notification from eReaderIQ that Banking on Death, the first in the John Thatcher series by Emma Lathen, is now out on Kindle. I also see that When In Greece, the ninth in this series, is available too. I don't recognize the publisher - Simply Media? Although the price of $5.99 is a bit much for very old backlist titles, I do hope very much that this will be the start of getting this whole series in e-book!

I just got the same notice from ereaderiq. I don't know what's going on with it. I jumped right on it and bought it without doing a look-inside first.

I always choose the download and transfer option when I'm on my laptop but I was using the browser on my tablet at the time so I just left it at the default delivery option -- first hint of something not quite right was that the default was not my old K3 that I use just to have somewhere for my pre-orders to go but was instead my Voyage.

I got out the Voyage and opened the book. The formatting is all messed up -- words all run together. Opened settings and instead of the usual format settings there was an option to turn on animation. Didn't want to confuse the poor Voyage any further so used my laptop browser to check the look-inside. It looks the same there.

Maybe it's supposed to be some sort of "enhanced" book that might work in an Ipad app or something. I just emailed support (I hate phones) to check into it.

It looks like that book was published (badly) as a fixed format e-book. It looks like whoever put it on Amazon didn't know what they were doing.

I wonder if it's even a legal copy. The books are still recent enough that I'd have expected one of the agency publishers to still have the rights.

I hope it gets straightened out. The series has been on my wish list forever.

I had a look at the listing for Banking On Death at Amazon and the first thing that made me suspicious of it was that the cover image used was not correct. I think this is not a legal copy.

Thanks for emailing customer service - please pass along what you learn! I hadn't yet convinced myself to spend $5.99, so hadn't checked either title out in detail. I just used KU to download to Kindle on my Android phone and both are messed up on that platform too.

Most of the Thatcher titles in DTB have been OOP for so long that I figured the rights had reverted, and maybe had been hung up since one of the two authors passed away a while ago and the other is in her late 80s. Maybe wishful thinking, but I am still hoping these are legit (even if looking amateur), and that the publisher clean them up once they get enough feedback
