Since your info box does not mention that you own a PW-3.

You can build your own Kindle audio adapter for less than the cost of Amazon's version. You can get the parts needed really cheap from eBay.

The video also tells you how to get this to work on a Voyage.

It is possible. If you cannot play music from the menu, you may need a hack (such as KUAL) to play music.

Right, I didn't notice that. I assumed the PWs are pretty much the same in capability.

They should be - all after PW-1 are i.MX6 based and OTG **should** be working on them all.
It could be a 'Marketing Limitation' only, not a technical one.

You mght be on to something.

I had no problems installing the VoiceView TTS data fles from Amazon on my PW2 using the built-in update menu option.

However, the site also states (emphasis mine):

I.e., unless Amazon releases a 5.7.4.1 firmware update for PW2 models or someone figures out how to implement the TTS specific changes introduced in the 5.7.4.1 firmware in PW2 and PW1 models, I'm out of luck.

Out of curiosity, I ran dmesg on the Kindle and got the follwing output:

I don't "speak dmesg," but it looks like the PW2 interprets my usb audio card (C-Media Electronics Inc. [0D8C:0014]) as a USB storage device.

That might be reasonable -
If the sound driver internally just copies the audio file to the sound device.

Did (or does) a new device node show up in /dev when you plug in the audio device?
If not, either it isn't suppose to or your firmware version is missing a u-dev rule (which would be something fairly easy to find).

Before connecting the device - that will clear the ring buffer and anything in it afterwards is the result of your connecting the device.

That says it works on the PW3, but only with the latest firmware. I tried my $0.99 USB audio dongle on my PW3 this morning and it would not even power on. However, I am using the JB 5.6.5 firmware. I may upgrade to the latest FW and try again. I wonder what USB audio chipsets are supported (and I hope mine works). We shall see. Still busy trying to jailbreak a PW2 (as reported, the HTML jailbreak seems to not work on a PW2)...

If we CAN get sound on our new kindle models, that gives even more reason for me to finish my kindle video player (with sound) for all eink kindles (including the PW1), eh? I am now losslessly compressing the pre-dithered videos to 1/4th the previous size (xz instead of gz).
