Eek I had no idea this could happen. I've been taking my PRS-505 out with me on walks in the cold; the worst I got was some ghosting. But I definitely won't be doing it anymore. |

Under product specs, in the "About your Kindle" Guide that I believe is the paper version you get with the Kindle, it states this. Operating temperature 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C) and Storage Temperature Storage temperature 14°F to 113°F (-10°C to 45°C) It doesn't, however, state specifically that you can harm it by not following the guidelines......... |

I take mine with me almost everywhere and I do have to leave it locked in the car at times. This is my second winter with it and it's certainly not as sensitive to cold as he claims. [knocks on wood and gives offering to the gadget gods] Of course the people up north in Wisconsin would know better then I. |

I put that last in just so I could forestall any "but it didn't say it would hurt it" posts. Living here, I never have to worry about the cold, but I'll think twice before I take it out in summer........

Hey. I lived in ARKANSAS for 12 years. There, if you go out in summer, you break out in a sweat if you BLINK. I"ll take this dry heat anytime. Okay, I may spontaneously combust, or be petrified within 1.5 seconds, but at least I won't sweat! I'll get a gallon baggie and keep it in an ice chest .........

I live in the midwest so sadly we get the negatives and the upper digits here. I would have to worry about it freezing to death or incinerating haha. Then again.. I'm allergic to the sun and mold.. so outside = bad. Thus me and my reader only make short car trips. I think I am in the safe zone on that one. |

I've used my Cybook at temperatures around 0°c (32°F). I did note in my recent long term review that at such temperatures there seem to be occasional screen refresh issues. I'll be more careful in future but I'd also note that the ability to read a few pages while waiting for a bus/train is one of the features of eReaders so having to be careful about temperatures is not good. |

During Christmas holiday I took my Sony Reader PRS 500 for a trip. We went skiing. OK we tried to go skiing, but the skilift was not working yet, so we just had some fun riding sledges and slides, teaching little kids how to stand on skis for about three hours. I had my reader in my wooden box in a small backpack. It was -18 degrees Celsius (somewhere about 0 Fahrenheit). After about three hours I returned to hotel and switched my reader on. My battery went from 2 bars to "I need to be charged immediately before I function again" screen. After I charged the batteries I kept reading and reading and reading .... |

I'm more worried about high temperatures than low ones. Here we rarely get below 0 °C (32 °F), and that's outdoors, winter and at night, a situation in which I'm not likely to be using an ebook reader. But in summer, at midday, it's usual to have ~40 ºC (104 °F), and I might like to be outside, under a tree, reading after lunch...

I carry my cybook around most of the time, reading it on the train traveling to work. I have noticed in the cold weather of the last few months that wile standing on the platform waiting for my train the screen refresh of the book reader slows to a crawl. That's when it is about -2 C, it soon speeds up when I get on the train. I did not not notice any effect on the battery, though now I think about it I am having to charge the book reader more often. Chris. |

Cold does dreadful things not only to electronics, but to every mechanical object there is. Plastic becomes as brittle as glass, fluids refuse to circulate, viscous lubrication becomes grout, battery power is reduced to a trickle. The more complex a machine is, the more susceptible it is to cold. My solution for cold weather: Paper books. |
