The problem as I see it is that you cannot use the audio dongle while the Kindle is charging after the audio dongle drained the power from the Kindle.

Is VoiceView for Kindle the same as VoiceView for Fire? If so, why spend $140 on the Paperwhite bundle when you can spend $50 for a Fire 7 and not have a dangling dongle? |

As Nate pointed out at his site, the primary purpose of the dongle solution is to have an answer to the demands of the disabilities act so they can sell eink readers to libraries and schools. The dongle can stay in a drawer until it is actually needed by the sight impaired.

I realize that many (including me) prefer eink to LCD for ebooks, but I'm willing to bet that we're in the minority. Most of my friends that read ebooks, do so on LCD devices like phones and tablets. They can't be bothered with spending extra money for an ereader when their tablet does the same thing and more.

Indeed for vision-impaired people, Fire theoretically has more to offer in terms of display property adjustments (screen magnifier, ability to adjust font size of menus, high-contrast text, color inversion, color correction etc.). However it is a more complex device to operate than Paperwhite, and some may prefer the simplicity of the latter. VoiceView (at least on the Fire, and I'd expect it to be similar on Kindle) is a fairly 'intrusive' feature. Don't imagine this as the return of TTS to the Kindle. Every time you touch the screen, it is going to talk back to you. That is a godsend for people with vision issues, but probably annoying for everybody else.

A lot of people without disabilities have been asking for this too -- people that want to read with e-ink and just turn on audio when doing housework or commuting. If they ever sell the adapter separately it's not much money to spend for upgrading an existing Kindle.

I think they need to gauge demand and get more field testing before they offer the audio module separately. One may hope that a straight-up 'TTS' mode may become available at some point. But I think the priority here is to make an accessible Kindle available right away so that barriers to government contracts are removed. Anybody going to order one? |
