Does the new OpenDyslexia font work? (It's more or less unreadable to me as a mostly-non-dyslexic.)

I find most of what you write both insulting and irrelevant, much more so than kobayashi, who was suspended.

This thread was about whether there are splotchy kindle screens and whether there are any that have no cones or gradients. And it's somehow turned into an insult about people claiming to have abilities to see things.

Done. I won't be checking this site for information again. Sad and appalling.

Er... I don't know what you read about this that was insulting, let alone 'sad and appalling': I did say I was going off on a long divagation about cameras versus the human eye, most of which I can cite references to back up if asked. This was, in fact, directly relevant, as the means being used to 'prove' the horrendousness of (by some claims) all frontlit Kindle screens everywhere.

(And 'suspended' is, as far as I can tell, kobayashi's own joke about his/her own status, not a report of some sort of punitive moderator action. (S)he's been posting while listed as 'suspended' for so long that I was tempted to ask what sort of crane or body part (s)he was suspended by )

I don't know of any Kindles with no visible cones of any sort under any lighting levels at all (I'm not sure that's technically possible yet). That doesn't mean that photographic evidence of cones says anything meaningful about normal use.

Not for me it doesn't but each dyslectic is different. I've tried fonts made for dyslexia but they were uncomfortable. Slab serif fonts work best for me.

Just ignore NullNix if you don't like the posts. Also, it is the nature of forums for threads to sometimes drift off-topic. All it takes sometimes is someone to post back on-topic to set the thread back on topic.

I'm wondering if what you're seeing is uncorrected astigmatism, which often comes with nearsightedness. Before I got a prescription that corrected for that, too, moving my head laterally or rotating it would cause text to swim in exactly the way you describe (differently in each eye, too).
I suspect that's part of it. I've always had astigmatism and my glasses mostly do correct for it but I've been thinking it's time to get a new prescription. But I mis-phrased that a little -- I should have said the text HAD swum further away rather than that it was currently in the process of swimming away as I watched it.

But it's definitely at least partly the Voyage screen itself. I have, or have had, thirteen ereaders (I didn't realize it was that many until I listed and counted them just now ) and the Voyage is the only one with that particular problem.

Has anybody else had luck exchanging their Oasis and getting one without the blotchy lighting? Mine isn't awful, but it's got very noticeable light cones when I'm reading in the dark, such as in bed.

I really like the Oasis as a whole, I just can't get past the annoying lighting, so I'd prefer not to return it unless I really don't stand much of a chance of getting a better one.

I returned my first Oasis because of a color shift and the light cones. The second Oasis has minimal if any color shift, but the cones are slightly more noticeable. I'm still deciding whether to keep it. I'm trying to see if I can used to ignoring the cones when reading. I really like it otherwise and don't want to return it because I'm not going to get another one if I do. I think my device is probably pretty good. I see those cones to some degree in every photo except in the official reviews and my guess is either those photos are altered or the devices are cherry picked.

My first Oasis had blotchy color and very noticeable light cones. My second one is much better. Hard to say what your odds are, but there are better ones out there.

Thanks for the experiences. I've decided to try to get a replacement for mine to give it another shot. Fortunately, Amazon is able to ship one out right away rather than waiting another few weeks, so I'll try to post a comparison and results in a few days.

Maybe visual acuity has something to do with the differences seen. I'm at 20/12 and 20/15 uncorrected.

Just to add to the experiences in case anybody is keeping track, I received my replacement Oasis and it's quite a bit better than my first one, although decidedly not perfect. I can still spot the light cones if I look for them, but they aren't painfully clear. I'm planning to keep it since the ergonomics make up for the still slightly uneven lighting.

FYI...

If you purchased from Amazon you should be able to receive an immediate replacement. They only ship the Oasis as a stand alone unit for replacements (not the entire retail package). I was told to hold on to everything (cover, cable) and just return the Oasis. I requested a replacement yesterday and will receive it tomorrow.

As a side note, the black cover package (3G) is in stock and available for same day delivery (US).
