9.7" vs. 13.3" e-ink e-reader for big pdfs
Hi!
I use Kindle DXG to read pdfs. Was quite satisfied but not altogether. It would not properly resize the document, fit to screen function, and percentage magnification is not sufficient. Could someone, who has worked with other 9.7 readers with good options for magnifying the text on the streen, share his experience? Do the more recent 9.7 ereaders handle pdf (image pdf, that is, pdf scanned and saved as contaning image of the text, not text itself) well enough? If not, I'll have to definitely consider buying 13.3 model. However, the option of the stylus in recent 9.7 models seems to be a good bonus, which is not yet available for 13.3. I also tried to read text 13.3 ipad pro, but found it not to be good for the eyes. Last edited by xtech; 04-12-2016 at 07:32 AM. |

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=267140 It's an Android reader with a stylus. So you can use your favorite Android Pdf app. I pre ordered one. We'll have more information in approximately two weeks. |

I know of this ereader. I was asking about the experience of those who used 9.7 (other than Kindle DX). If their experience with pdf is good, text is clear, magnifying options are perfect, so there is not such a big need for 13.3 which is still rather expensive. There is now a new reader with stylus and built-in light, and built-in light is not in the 13.3 reader.

It depends on your exact circumstances. I recommend you go from the DX to a 13.3 inch device if you like bigger screens. There is no 13.3 reader with front light on the market. You might refer to that 'imaginary vaporware' one on indiegogo? I'm not sure it will even hit the market with that attributes. I was dreaming of a 13.3 inch e-ink reader for almost 10 years so I'm a little bit biased with that topic. ![]() Last edited by joblack; 04-12-2016 at 11:22 AM. |

xtech I have a DXG also ... I put duokan on it -out of the box- .. never used amazon for anything and find it works quite well (not 100%) on pdf's djvu's and epubs .. the version I have is an old 0.5.13 issue
I have no idea if it is still around or has suffered 'bit rot' and disappeared or not ... Might be worth a try Jim |

I used to read in landscape mode on my 9.7" ereader. Onyx pdf handling is complete with all the required features. I also want built-in light and I feel that 13.3 might be too big |

i currently use my samsung tab s2 9.7" tablet with moon reader+ to read all the PDFs.
i usually don't have to do much PDF margin editing on a 9.7" screen, but i do have to play with the zooming levels in the android ebook app to make the PDF display just right. i plan on buying a 13.3" ereader over the 9.7" ereader (was considering N96 with touch screen) mainly for two reasons: to avoid as much PDF editing as i can, and to basically have no problems reading bigger PDF's around magazine size. so this leaves me deciding between the upcoming 13.3 devices, the onyx boox max or good ereader. one potential problem with the good ereader 13.3 is the 512MB RAM (esp if they decide to run android 5.0+ on it) -- hopefully developers can develop an optimized version of android that runs efficiently. i do have to say though alot of the good ereader's video demos of the device are edited almost "too well", as if they are hiding something bad about the device. the safer bet is the onyx boox max, but it is almost 30% heavier than the good ereader. with that being said, im still on the fence on which 13.3" device to get if you HAVE to have the backlighting, then the 9.7" N96 ML is your best bet |

I have a 9.7 inch Onyx boox M96. When I read an image pdf, I have to switch to landscape mode, or the word is too small to read. I guess a 13.3 inch is better.
Onyx Boox Max has 1G RAM and will sale in May. |

The dutch vendor Icarus is going to launch the 13.3" too and they have a very nice picture comparing device sizes in their Indigogo campaign:

I read a lot of academic PDFs on my iPad, which has a 9.7" screen, and find the size to be fine. If I zoom the page to hide the margins, it's comfortable to read with no scrolling required. Personally I see no need for a screen that's any larger.

Thanks for all the replies.
Well, I read some stuff on my kindle dxg 3.2.1 but I find it not sufficient to read some image pdfs, it just does not zoom well. And I am not sure that more modern e-ink reader will provide sufficient zooming. The backlight is very useful thing, but still the greater screen and thus better zooming is a better feature for me. I asked ipad users about their experience with their tablet, and they also confirmed some minor experience of mine, the screen of ipad is not good for long reading, though suprisingly some people read it without any problems. How lucky they are. They can get just ipad pro 12 with all multiple features, graphics, 3G, and also reading feature, and this all in one device, and does not have to stick to different devices for different functions. If I had had personal experience with Onyx new 9.7 model, and had found it suitable in terms of fine tuning of zooming, and perfect rendering of the color of the greish/blacking/oldish image pdfs, I would change my view, but I do not have it, and use only DX of this size, and so have to rely on my experience and feedbacks of others. So, at the moment I am leaning towards buying some 13.3 model. Last edited by xtech; 05-09-2016 at 07:27 AM. |
