Deadhorse, Alaska

When I was working on oil wells in Alaska I would fly in and out of the airport in Deadhorse. There had been quite a few crashes at the airport and, at the time (mid 1970s) the airport didn't have the resources (or, perhaps, the motivation) to remove the wrecks, so they were towed off to the sides and we landed between them.

The City of Lakewood was incorporated in 1969 as Jefferson City. Soon after, an election was held and the city's name was changed to Lakewood. This was due to an overwhelming dislike of "Jefferson City" and the perceived notion it would be confused with existing communities in Colorado and Missouri.
