Testing the page speed of the built-in PDF reader

I still haven't had a ton of playing time, but my next experiment was to play with the built-in reader:
  • Copying PDFs over the microUSB cable worked just fine, but it was extremely slow on a USB 2.0 port (1 MB/sec on average). I get much better speeds taking out the microSD card and using an adapter directly. There's a very nice screen and button each time for enabling "USB Drive" mode and disabling it.
  • Tested a Marvel comic PDF (the old ones scanned done by GIT corp). If you're not familiar with this, then these are 2-up, watermarked, somewhat dirty color scans of the original comics. It looks like most of the time was spend rendering since each page flip would take somewhere past 15 seconds.
  • Tested two Pathfinder RPG books and the Serenity RPG. These are very nice looking PDFs, with lots of fancy text and background images. Flipping a page would take around 1-3 seconds, depending on the graphics. Readability of the Pathfinder books was fine, but the Serenity RPG has very dark images for a background so text/background contrast was poor.
  • Tested a couple of CS textbooks. Both rendered at about a page per second and mixing text with diagrams (e.g. data structures, flowcharts) was easily viewable on one page.
  • Tested a couple of black & white comics (Bloom County PDF from Humble Bundle, Elfquest EPUB from Kobo). Both looked great and rendered fine, but again not much faster than one page per second. Reading in landscape mode with Bloom County was
  • Tested one dark color comic (Rising Stars Compendium PDF). Again, the overall dark backgrounds/colors of the comic made for very poor contrast, but the rendering times were decent.

TL;DR: Color comics hard to read, especially darker toned ones. Black & white comics great. Textbook-style mixing of text and images great.

Still haven't tested a 2-column, mixed text with smaller images PDF (i.e. a journal paper).

rchiang thanks for the updates, please keep them coming!

i preordered the device but was hoping you could help answer some questions since you have the device on hand:

do you find the 13.3" reader the perfect size for your textbooks?

can you try loading a PDF from dropbox app? will be slower but i was planning on downloading books from my dropbox account and loading them as my primary way of getting a book

does the overall avg of 1 - 3 seconds page turn frustrate you or is it just fine when reading a PDF?

when you're holding the device, does it seem tiring over time or oversized? i think nathan from digital ereader mentioned it was way too big for him

Yes, it's very readable for Computer Science textbook style content so far. I don't have any other examples to test with though.

I haven't sideloaded any apps yet. Still figuring out how I can do all that without too many annoyances. That may take a while. In general, I've tried that sort of thing before on a tablet or phone and I find the download time too annoying. But I expect most apps don't do the caching well.

It doesn't bother me for general reading. It's annoying when I think I'm close to the page I want to read. But I'm not being particularly clever with managing bookmarks or searching. I expect I'll need to be if I move to more non-linear reading with this eReader (e.g. for non-textbook technical books).

It's definitely large, but I haven't found it too heavy. The size doesn't bother me given that the text+images are very good. I used to use a 10" tablet which had a smaller screen size (just enough to annoy me at times) and was a bit too heavy to read for long periods.

It's definitely a different device. There's no real advantage to reading standard books given that you can adjust the font size. But for anything not text-only it's much better. For example:
  • Aziz Ansari's "Modern Romance" has a handful of inline graphs
  • Many journal papers and similar technical content are a combination of text with equations and/or graphs. It's even worse with standard 2-column formatting.

I've tried the above on a 6" eReader (Kobo Aura HD) and it's too frustrating for me.

Unfortunately multi-second page rendering speeds are the reason I stick with my iPad with its fast CPU for reading PDFs. I have to read a great many of them for my academic research, and no eink device I've tried has had a sufficiently fast CPU to make it a pleasant experience. Rendering PDFs is something that really does need a fast CPU and a decent amount of memory.

Pleased to hear that it's working for you, though. Obviously we all have different views on these things.

It's not a big deal. In my experience the page turn with the Onyx Boox Max works for a lot of pdfs in less or equal two seconds. If I would have to work with very complex pdfs I would have to adapt.

Think about page turns with real books. For real books you'll need some time for page turns as well and you could press for the next page a few seconds before.

Can you find, open books, change books etc., without using the pen?

Also, what is the page turn speed like for non-pdf books like mobi, epub etc. How does it compare to other ebook readers? Thanks.

exactly what i wanted to hear while waiting for mine (2nd batch)!

whats your thoughts on the stock ebook reader?

i use moon+ reader on my android tablet bc i can zoom lock and sync pages on multiple devices.

but from what i saw in the videos the stock ebook reader can do a bunch of things that make the PDF experience good.

also pls feel free to post more pics, videos, other features

Good to know this. I was wondering if it displayed blank page during delay before page turnes? It is easy to adapt to this delay before page turns. My Kobo Wifi had slight delay before page turns that I had unknowingly adapted to by started page turn a few seconds before I was finished reading page. Only realized I was doing this when I started using Kobo Wifi and it was turning page before I was finished reading page.

Hello,

I would like to know if taking note by hand is possible with the onyx boox max ?
Is there one application ready to do that ? something that lets you write as if on paper, save your notes, modifying them afterwards ?

Could those who recently purchased this 13" ereader try this ?

Also, to what extent can you make some drawings ? that is to say, does the screen recognizes several levels of pressure ? the pen inclination ?

At last, is it annoying to do everything with the pen (no finger touch) ? or do you get used ?

Thanks for your help

Best regards

Can anyone post a video of their device with VNC viewer(teamviewer or similar Remote Desktop app).

I really want to know how good this device is as a wireless monitor for a PC.

I suspect for note taking the app squid might work well, if it runs on the onyx? Maybe someone who has got the device could check if that app usable/responsive?
