If you weren't able to discern the color gradient problem on the Voyage, you likely won't be able to discern it on the Oasis either. Some people have more sensitive eyesight than others.

Surely not: people were complaining about gradients on PW screens, too, and they're not flush. (And, in fact, if you look at it in angled light, the Oasis screen is not flush either: it's inset below the level of the surround, just like on the PW, but the glass layer on top makes it remarkably hard to tell. When you think about it, it would have to be: the lights are below the surround, but above the screen, so the screen *must* be lower than the surround.)

This is doubly true since people are reporting not an off-colour screen in general, but a colour change that varies with distance from the LEDs. The only things which vary with distance from the LEDs are the light guide's diffraction grating and the light intensity; the former is, obviously, meant to counteract the latter, so if there is a change in any quality of lighting with distance from the LEDs, the only likely cause is the grating, not the glass, and certainly not the capacitance layer (a regular grid if it's like other such layers).

Could it be that the color change and intensity people are talking about the same thing. The light after all is not neutral and a different color than the background. When intensity of the light is lower, more of the background is showing. That´s what I´m seeing when taking photos in pitch darkness with HDR and copying one side to the other.

 first post here, great forum

Hi all, I found this forum when I was researching the Kindle Oasis...I'm happy to report it arrived yesterday and only then did I get around to reading about all the problems people were having. My initial feeling about the device was overwhelmingly positive. I found a totally dark room here at work, and cranked the light to 100% and was absolutely able to see some gradient color shifting and also the 'cones' people are talking about. I had a moment of panic and disappointment, and then set the light to something that I would normally use for comfortable reading. I realized the screen looked damn near perfect again. After about 5 hours reading on the device in bright sunlight (no light) and in my bedroom last night (light set to about 10-11) I'm back in the happy camp. I can't imagine a situation where I would crank the light any higher than where it is currently and the device is VERY satisfying to read on. Look forward to participating on the forums as time goes on, it looks like a very active community. -Matt |

And neither do the Kobos with the non-flush screens. That's why we're guessing that it has something to do with either the capacitive technology coupled with LED frontlights (something never seen in traditional capacitive screens) or a coating of some kind on one side of the glass or the other.

So I guess it's caused by the glass? Shari

The color shift from one side to the other is quite believable considering all the LED's are on one side. Having half on each side would probably minimize or eliminate the problem but also make the device thicker. I am personally happy with the choice. I can see a slight difference in color from thick side to thin side when I look for it. Not so much with actual reading. And the device is definitely more comfortable to hold from either side when reading. So far battery life seems more than the Voyage. But I read at 15 or above and four or five hours a day so months of battery is ridiculous. It is misleading or, to be nice, good marketing to estimate reading time at a level or 10 and only 30 minutes a day.

The top-down color gradient of the Voyage was more acceptable to me than the left-right color gradient in the Oasis. The Voyage bothered me the most (as has been well documented) when I read in landscape mode because every line of text went from yellow to blue.

Under normal lighting, the cones are much less visible. Heck I can see gradients on my bedroom wall at night if I have the small lights around the ceiling on. It is how ALL lights work.

Oh wait, you can not do that. What is a normal level to your eyes might be too bright to me and too dark to HarryT. That is why ereaders come with adjustable lights. There is not a normal, never has been never will be because ALL humans see differently. So either adjust the lights where they don't bother you or get rid of the ereader and buy something else if the lights are that annoying to you. You have made your agenda perfectly clear.
