Yes that's what I meant. Thanks.

Ha! Yes, of course, that makes more sense than what I was thinking

After reading awhile without the cover this evening, I popped Oasis back into the cover to see what would happen. The device battery registered 77%, and indeed the device started charging from the cover until it reached 94%, all while I continued to read.

This is in contrast to last night when I left the cover on with the device charged at 94% and the device battery dropped to 91% while I was reading.

Picked up an Oasis from Best Buy yesterday. The screen was immediately better than my PW1, and the lighting along the edge looked fine. Unfortunately there are a couple defects on the screen: some lines of stuck pixels along the bottom edge, and a shadowy smear along the top. Does anyone know how Amazon's warranty replacement will work if I bought it from Best Buy? Will they ship me a new one with a prepaid return label, same as if I bought it directly from Amazon?

Your local store had some in stock? Or you had it shipped there?

Ordered online last week for ship-to-store, and picked it up yesterday. It is completely unavailable online or in-store now, so warranty replacement seems the only way to get a new one.

Yeah, you still may be in the queue with Amazon as well.

My Kindle arrived on time. My first reaction was how small it was. The screen is the same size as my Voyage but it somehow feels smaller.

I'm either very lucky or my eyesight is too feeble but it seems to have a great display. I can only see very vague evidence of so-called cones at full brightness in a darkened room. Under normal conditions it seems very good.

Since the current book I am reading has such a small default font, Eon from Greg Bear, the Bookerly font has to be moved from my normal "at 4" position to "at 6". Even this is slightly too small so the contrast is not as stark as I would like. For the first time I am tempted to visit Calibre/Apprentice Alf. Can I change the default font easily and only do a single book?

Sure. Very easy to change the default font size in a book.

I just posted a similar message in the thread about the screen. Mine too arrived yesterday and I had the exact same experience as you. Under normal conditions, it is awesome. I saw the cones at full brightness but would probably never use it that way...way too bright, almost like a tablet.

The comfort of reading based on the ergonomics and the weight was really the biggest takeaway for me after day 1. I think I'm falling in love.

Why would you have the light set to an uncomfortably bright level on a tablet?

I was curious to see what all this talk was about the splotchy screens and gradient colors and cones was all about, because I didn't notice any problem whatsoever with the screen...UNTIL I cranked the brightness to full.

My intention was to say that if I wanted to read something on a screen that bright, I would just use a tablet and wouldn't bother with an e-reader.

Yes, I understood that was what you meant. My question was why, if you were to choose to read on a tablet, you would have the screen brightness set to an uncomfortably high level? I read on both my Kindle Voyage and my iPad, and set the screen brightness to a comfortable level on both devices. Perhaps I've misunderstood you, but you seem to be suggesting that tablets always have screens that are too bright. If it's too bright, simply turn the brightness down!

Ah, I understand what you were asking. I wouldn't do that, and I do turn the brightness down on a tablet but it is still a backlit screen as opposed to the front lighting on a reader. If you max the Kindle's brightness, it is so bright that it feels like a tablet with the backlight on, is all.

Question Tutorial?

Consider me a dummy. Is there a tutorial somewhere that shows Calibre setup and Alf install?

Also I had a much older version of Calibre around 2013. Is there a way to remove it first?

Will it change anything on my Kindle so that I cannot remove Calibre/Alf if I don't like it?

Thanks.

You need to ask Calibre questions in the Calibre forum. I don't want to derail this thread.
