I got my 2nd Oasis today. 1st was with a black cover from Amazon, 2nd is a walnut cover from Best Buy. Bunch of photos are attached. Oasis #1 is on the left, Oasis #2 is on the right, or if there's a close up of a screen, the 1st photo is Oasis 1, 2nd photo is Oasis 2. Observations: - Both have shadow cones - Texture of the black cover is like plastic. Texture of the walnut cover is like leather or suede, feels significantly more luxurious - Walnut cover is darker than expected (I like this) - Oasis 1 screen appears a little blue, Oasis 2 screen appears a little yellow To my eyes Oasis 2 looks little bit better but not perfect. Have yet to see a photo of an Oasis that doesn't have the shadow cones. Probably sticking with Oasis 2 and the walnut cover. |

Ever tried taking a picture of your own Voyage, at the full brightness & in a dark room? I wonder what *it* looks like. You've vetted it as "good", live.

Still haven't seen any photographic proof of a Voyage or Oasis without screen problems.

If I max out brightness and look straight at the lights I see lights with cones and even a small pinhole normally hidden by the screen border. But when I read, the display looks great :-) https://tovare.com/tovare/img/kindleOasis.jpg Last edited by tovare; 05-04-2016 at 03:57 PM. |

I got my 2nd Oasis yesterday and it is better than the first in that it is less yellow and only has a minimal color shift, hardly noticeable. It also has the merlot cover that I really like. It does have light cones but that doesn't seem to bother me when reading. I could be happy with the 2nd Oasis if it weren't for the fact that my Voyage has a better screen - only minimal color shift that I've stopped noticing, no visible light cones and better contrast than either Oasis. First Oasis has been returned and if I decide to return this one I'm done. I don't plan to try again as I'm happy with my Voyage and don't think the odds of finding an Oasis with a perfect screen are very good.

I've shown you mine, and noted that the tiny cones and bit of dimming visible on the photograph are *not visible* with the naked eye: the screen is essentially perfect, and often far more evenly illuminated than a paper book would be. Why do you care about brightness variations visible only on photographs? Are your eyes CCDs?

Part of this, again, is the intensity thing -- the screen brightness is meant to be set so that the page appears white, but no higher, and I do that, and no gradient is discernible -- but the camera sees that same level differently, and sees the same thing I do at certain too-low lighting levels, that the side of the screen further from the LEDs is dimmer than the other. If I observe this effect myself, it's just a sign that the light level is set wrong (and the screen is probably bloody hard to read with the light that low, so I turn it up three or four notches, and the problem goes away and the screen is easier to read). You get intensity gradients across the screen when reading paper books with a side light too, but nobody complains about that, because, y'know, it's *not a problem*.

No. When I say color, I mean color. Your screen has a color gradient. Just take a picture and cut/paste a small square of text from one edge of the screen to the other edge and you'll be able to see the difference. Not everyone is as discerning/sensitive to the screen issues.

Just got my Oasis today. It has both the color gradation and the light cones, but the cones are barely noticeable in real life. Definitely much less noticeable than on my 1st-gen Paperwhite, which was the last Kindle I bought and kept. Although the gradation is worse on my Oasis than it was on my Voyage, it doesn't bother me as much for some reason. I'll have to read some more to see, but I think I'll be able to live with the Oasis despite the imperfections. I love the way it feels in the hand, and I think the cover (mine's black) is great. It doesn't feel plastic-y at all to me. I like it more than the Amazon-brand leather cover I had for my Paperwhite, but I never had a problem with that one either. All in all, I think this will be a solid upgrade, but I am disappointed that Amazon can't get the screen color to be more uniform.

Is it at all possible to get a perfectly uniform lighting without resorting to other display technologies like OLED ? For instance all LED TV´s has some uniformity issues to, especially those that are edge-lit. |

Thanks for sharing the pictures, might order the Walnut as well rather than my black staple, it looks much nicer. Last edited by cerem0ny; 05-04-2016 at 09:20 PM.

THIS has cones!!! Maybe the first reader with leds. (Sony PRS-700.) So, the new Oasis does not look bad after all.
