Once again Kobo has managed to make a big mess while trying to make improvements.

The improvements are welcome: I can't say how many times I have wanted to search my library and instead have to browse 10 titles at a time.

The worst thing Kobo does is to delete items that the publisher has refreshed and so now it appears as if I have to buy it again. Good grief.

Like others here, I back-up every title I buy.

Most changes to the Kobo site get rolled out one country at a time. Your probably in a country that is (un)lucky enough to be later in the roll-out. (You can choose which)

This one always amuses me. There is lots of discussion about copyright and the license associated with ebooks. Everyone seems to want it more like paper books. But, here is one place that everyone seems to think it must NOT be like paper books. It seems that authors/publishers/retailers are expect to replace the version you bought with an updated version for the rest of your life.

looks like they managed to delete all books that were transferred over from other stores. Whsmith, Sony & Blinkbox books are missing from my library.

Luckily I hadn't bought many from those stores, have managed to recover most, but have a few that are no longer available.
All are in Calibre so will not bother contacting Kobo to sort out

Unlikely, given that there have been complaints in this thread from others users in the US already.

Though, of course, that makes it even more weird.

I would NEVER rely upon any ereader as the primary store for my books. They are too important to me.

Remember Calibre is free. All of my books are stored in Calibre. From there, a backup copy is ceated on another hard drive.

Then, and only then, I copy a small (2 x 25) collection to my ereader. These books are then flagged in a Calibre column headed OK (On Kobo or On Kindle, as the case may be. I use both.) I have another Calibre column to indicate Read Candidates (RC). The RC list in Calibre can be as long as you like, but I like to keep it manageable When a book is transferred to the reader, its RC flag is deleted, and replaced by an OK flag.

Once my current OK books have been read, they are deleted from the reader, and another collection is chosen from the RC list.

So, if anyhing should go amiss with my reader, it is an annoyance, but not a disaster.

I hope these ideas are helpful.

I would never rely on hard drives for anything if I can avoid it. Everything I care about is on cloud back-up.

While I like the format online (soooo tired of scrolling through 10 books at a time), I've had to install the Kobo update. This wasn't terribly swift (about 250 books, but it's already taken 10 minutes). I have yet to verify that I can still download a book from Kobo to put into Calibre.

Sorry, what update? There hasn't been a firmware or desktop update for months. And neither should have triggered a download of any books. Anything that is being synced should be because you hadn't downloaded them before.

And nothing has change about downloading books from the library on the site. If you could before, you can now.

According to the update, it came out early in 2016. The last time I accessed a book using the Kobo app on my Windows computer was at the very end of 2015. I guess I'm behind. Still trying to figure out where my books were put. They used to be in Adobe Digital editions folder. Searching, searching. I need to print out templates from a pattern in a book in my library and the app doesn't let you do that!

I would never rely on any one thing to store any of my precious files--everything is stored in multiple places. I have everything backed up automatically with Carbonite every night, I also have a giant external hard drive that I use as a backup, and certain things (like my books) are also backed up to other cloud services as well. For example, in addition to being backed up with Carbonite and to external hard drive, all of my ebooks are stored on my Kindle cloud, no matter where they came from initially. I also have a copy of my Calibre library stored on One Drive (I get a terabyte of space on Onedrive since I pay $100/year for MS Office).

With all of the options available today, why would anyone keep their precious files in only one place??
