On both of the Oasis that I have the most comfortable light setting number is the same as my Voyage and Paperwhites. The light cones are visible with the proper light settings in the ambient conditions in which I read. It is in low light conditions that they are most noticeable. They are not as visible over the text as my Paperwhites, but they are distracting bring in the margin of every line you read rather than the bottom.

After reading for several hours in a variety of light conditions, I am leaning towards keeping the second one with a pinhole rather than the first one with an extra-bright light in the corner which made an exaggerated light / shadow pattern compared to the typical pattern. I realize that this effect is due to the design, and I am more sensitive to seeing color gradients and lighting differences that don't bother others. I am just disappointed because I expected the lighting to be similar to my Voyage or better since it is the next generation. |

The fact is I have a near perfect PW2 at all light levels. The picture I posted from a review at Amazon UK is very similar to the light level I read at in darkness. The coning on a product costing £170 more and two generations later is far worse. |

I feel bad for everyone with a faulty oasis. If you love technology as much as I do, especially beautiful technology, it sucks waiting with baited breath for something beautiful only to not have it up to your standards. I had a two toned Voyage (which I kept) which I did not return but just got used to the colour shift and after a few weeks just got used to it. It totally ruined the whole technophilia experience for me!! Last edited by cerem0ny; 05-02-2016 at 03:29 AM. |

Yes, it should be perfect under normal operating conditions. But, most of those pictures come from not normal conditions. And should be taken with a grain of salt. Now just from what I have been reading, it seems to me if one is super light sensitive then perhaps a lighted Kindle is not a good fit. Note: any of the lighted kindles would bug my husband because he sees all the cones. Me on the other hand only see them in the very extreme photos. Oh and on extremes, a 5 qt kitchenaid can hold the ingredients for 9 pizza crusts. However, there is a good chance you will break the dough hook. I read that one in another forum. Oh and for me: I expect a gadget or device to work perfectly if I paid more than $20 for it. |

I'd guess that the lighting issue is just poor quality control while the color gradient is a product of the flush screen because the PWs and the Kobos do not exhibit the same problem to the same degree. |

I agree the quality control on the Oasis Screens is terrible, this is the top of the line most expensive device they make now. I wonder about the quality control on Mr. Bezo's rockets now

Received my Best Buy unit today and happy to report the screen looks really good. Put the backlight to the highest level in a pitch black room and can't see any "cone" effect from the LED's so that is good. I don't see any color gradient across the screen either.

Likewise I cannot see any cones. I even tried a magnifying glass. Very pleased.

has anyone provided a photo of an oasis screen that doesn't have cones or color gradients? i've yet to see one. seen a few online reviews boasting of uniform light but the photos they provide clearly have a color gradient and cones. has anyone got evidence this isn't the case for 100% of the oasis readers, like the voyage readers?

A camera will tend to emphasize differences in lighting more than the eye does. I don't take a photograph as the final word.

Yep, a camera will dramatically emphasise contrast differences. I'm a keen photographer and, as a part of my Egyptology degree, I take many pictures of objects in Egyptian collections in museums. An object which, to the naked eye, appears to be evenly illuminated will often appear to have highly-visible shadows in a photograph.

I take it as a good representation of what I'll see. The photos of other kindles and their lighting issues and the lack of lighting issues on Kobos has played out for me in the real world just as I've seen in photos. Like I've said, I've yet to see a photo of a kindle screen that doesn't have a huge lighting issues.
