When the light on my Voyage and Oasis are off the screens both look the same to me. In the dark the Voyage has a cooler (bluer) screen, but that may just be the particular devices I have since they all vary. Overall the screen on my Voyage is better than the screen on my Oasis.

Note: shadow cones are clearly visible in the dark shot, but they're visible only to the camera: the same is true of the apparent brightness variation/shadow cone on the right of the light shot. To my eyes, both are entirely invisible and the screens are unvarying brightness fields: a clear consequence of the human eye's logarithmic intensity response versus a CCD's more nearly linear one.

This effect in particular is one reason why all such pictures should be more or less totally ignored, and posting them is a waste of time: the light you're seeing when you look at those images is the light from an almost-certainly-uncalibrated LCD screen with brightness response that depends mostly on screen age and manufacturing variation, after being picked up by a camera CCD with completely different optical properties to the human eye; the result bears little to no resemblance to the light being emitted by the actual Kindle and which your eye will thus see completely differently. To my eye, and I believe to any normally functioning human eye, the dark shot of my particular Kindle screen would look like an unvarying colour plane. I have extremely good night vision (perhaps to compensate for my crazy myopia!), normally go around with the house lights off, and routinely read on intensity zero on the PW1 after only a few minutes of adaptation time. If anyone can spot light intensity variations on this Kindle, it should be me. I can't. Amazon did not optimize their Kindle screens and lighting systems for cameras: it optimized them for human eyes. Unfortunately I have no way of detaching your eyes and transporting them here to see what I see... ah well!

As with all of biology, the degree of logarithmic response varies between individuals and can even vary between eyes in one individual (it is in part a property of both the neural architecture in each eye, and of the neural architecture of the visual cortex). It is quite possible that the people perennially dissatisfied with lighted Kindle screens simply have a less intense logarithmic response than those who are satisfied. I wonder if people who are dissatisfied have relatively poor night vision and are easily dazzled in bright sunlight? (Though this is also influenced by factors varying from rate and degree of iris dilation through to things in the higher levels of the visual cortex, so again shouldn't be taken as any sort of real evidence of anything. Vision is *complicated*.)
Word! A very nice description of the problem that led to so much confusion and misinformation about the Voyage's early issues in the uneven illumination thread.

It's possible my Kobo GLO HD has a very white clean screen and it has carta. In the Dark the screen is a warm yellowish cream but in normal light it's white. So it's very possible for the Oasis screen to be whiter but I remember reading they added more white to the screen. I forget the technical term.

I know that others absolutely love the IR touch, but for me, it's just one frustration after another.

This problem is resolved by keeping the fingers off the screen when page turning is not intended. The only ways unintended page turns could occur on any screen (IR or Capacitive) without having a finger on the screen is if the device had a tap to flip feature like the tolino. It is literally physically impossible otherwise. The issue here is most likely the way you grip the bezel. You've probably got your fingers overflowing onto the screen.

On the other hand, having the device not turn page when you intend it to is a genuine concern. I do think it's to do with the engine, not the IR panel. I've heard of people using ePub on Kobos who have this issue, and it generally isn't one when reading kePub.

This is a bad Kindle for several reasons:

1.) The lighting system (the pictures should tell the whole story). It looks worse in person.

2.) The screen has this annoying border where all sorts of dust etc get trapped. Also, it's not "finished" very well, with jagged edges in places.

3.) The screen sucks.

4.) The screen is not even in terms of color temperature, though it's certainly better than the Voyage.

5.) The screen still sucks.

Link to two pictures:

I can't believe Amazon can't figure out a working lighting system for their Kindles.
Those pictures are absolutely disgraceful! It cost 450 dollars (in Oz!) and they are selling screens that look like THAT... Doesn't the whole 'high cost' thing justify the fact that you would expect the device to have, you know, a normal looking screen?
Thanks for sharing that. Definately not getting an oasis now!

I did this poll a while back:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=166744

The page turning problems come and go for me. I'm currently having problems: doesn't turn a page, or goes back instead of forward. Swiping works better, but I personally dislike swiping.

YMMV.

4 years is a long time in the world of e-readers.

I have those issues when using ePubs, but not with kePubs, which suggests to me that the culprit is the underlying engine, not IR screen tech.

4 years is a long time; and yet I still have these problems (which I, and apparently others are having, and using multiple readers). You get the canned responses of "try the latest firmware, I'm not having this problem", and yet the problems continue firmware after firmware.

I'm guessing if you did another poll today, you'd get similar results, regardless of format. At the time of the poll, "everyone" said they had no problems.

At the time of the poll, I was using EPub. Now, I'm using kepubs, and I still have problems.

YMMV. IMO.

With a capacitive touchscreen it would be fixed by me keeping the fingers off of the screen. Unfortunately, this is an IR touchscreen. I lie on my side and prop it up against a pillow. Unfortunately, it seems like every time I shift, a piece of the blanket, or a piece of the pillow, or maybe just a breeze causes the page to turn. When I use a device with a capacitive touchscreen, the page only turns when I touch it with my finger.

I too far prefer capacitive touchscreens. One of the main reasons I sold my Kobo H2O was the unreliability of the touchscreen. Fortunately there are devices on the market to suit those who prefer both IR and capacitive systems .

Taking a gamble on a Walnut one from best buy since they're in stock and amazon is out of stock until June. Will see how that screen looks and decide which (if any) to keep. I will say that aside from the lighting, after using it more, it really is awesome. Hope I get a good one or that they all aren't like this. Will find out next week when the new one is delivered

Distracting LED cones

Same here - quite disappointed with the Kindle Oasis. While I liked the new design (size, weight, page buttons, extended battery life) still the most important part in a e-reader is the screen (me thinks). I can clearly see the light cones that come from the 10 LED sources (there are indeed 10) as they are brighter than the rest of the page. To make things worse under low ambient light conditions and high Kindle Oasis light settings - a brownish color appears between the lights that is incredibly distracting (at least to me). Under a lamp source or outside in the sun the screen looks fine. Returned Kindle Oasis.

Perhaps the difference is the color of the LEDs? That is the only way I can explain the screens both being Carta, looking the same with the lights off and having different colors when lit.

Atlantic sorry about your screen. That was the first pic of an Oasis that I could clearly see the cones and shading. I would not have kept that screen either. Thanks for sharing your pic.
