As is typical these days, the publisher for the Indie short story is misrepresented: the publisher is Chuck Tingle. Amazon Digital Services is merely the distributor.
No different than the overdrive library listings that were attributing Indie titles to Smashwords as publisher. |

Contrary to the new catfight slates, the retro nominations are genuinely interesting.
Tough year. SLAN VS GRAY LENSMAN? Heinlein all over? Double dose of Harold Shea? Classic Leigh Brackett and Jack Williamson? Easy to vote: all of the above. |

It seems a bit strange to me that The Dark Forest didn't get voted in when The Three-Body Problem won a Hugo last year. I thought the former was as good as the latter.

The novella shortlist is actually pretty strong this year.

How did 'Space Raptor Butt Invasion' by Chuck Tingle become a Hugo finalist?

This is all on the Rabid Puppies.
The Sad Puppies made sure that their list is a recommendation list, not a slate. Unlike last year, there was no behind the scenes discussion between the SP4 organizers and Vox Day, and deliberately, no category had exactly 5 recommendations. To conflate the two puppy lists will undeservedly continue the ill rancor between general worldcon membership and people who agree with the sad puppies that certain subgenres get overlooked by the Hugo awards. Having said that, the Rabid Puppy slate was again a stinking pile of self-promotion on Vox Day's part, mixed with crappy works chosen to piss off the voters, plus a few decent works by well-respected authors in hopes that the voters will no award even the decent works. My prediction is that the voters will quickly realize which ones on Vox Day's slate could have been a nominee anyway, and vote for them anyway. |

Hopefully there won't be another scandal about the Hugo's this year like last year. At least I think it was the Hugo and last year.

The problem is that it takes 2 years to change the rules, so this year was always likely to be affected by the trolls.

The Puppies are running in front of an existing parade and claiming to lead it.

The novel, novella and both long and short form dramatic presentation categories seem to still have some genuinely interesting variety and something for everyone to vote for. I'm hoping people won't be put off by some of the actually deserving (as well as popular) works having been on either the rabid puppies slate or the sad puppies recommendation list (especially the latter).
Overall I'm just sad that the Hugos have been so overshadowed by all this outside drama these last two years. Especially this year, when I'm for the first time actually caring enough for something to want to win (Heaven Sent, which to me was probably not just the single best episode of Doctor Who ever but also the best episode of television I've ever seen, full stop). |
