Lots of self-published authors have a single author small "press".

Only publishers big enough to do separate contracts with Amazon can generally offer anything free. Self-pubs and small presses who generally use KDP don't get that option. The only way around it is to make it free elsewhere and wait for Amazon to price match it.

Thanks for the info. I got book 1 free in 2014 but finally got around to reading it a couple of months ago, and also now have the audio version. I have book 2 & 3 in my wish list.

Beat me to it. These are self-pub but I also read and liked the first three. Don't miss these if you enjoy Military SF.

As I recall, the problem with Amazon freebies and self-publishing is that once you set a book up, you can change the price but not add or remove one. That is, you can't change it from free to not-free (or vice versa) unless you use KDP Select, which requires exclusivity. There are several other Select-only marketing tools, like being able to schedule discounts, but that's the biggie.

You can change your price from $0.99 up to $200.00 any time you want. There is no changing from free to not-free because you can't set it free to begin with.

The price you choose may change your royalty option depending how you've selected things. To get 70% you have to price between $2.99 and $9.99. For the 35% option you can price between $0.99 and $200.00 (less than 3MB file), $1.99 and $200.00 (3MB to 10MB file) or between $2.99 and $200.00 (10MB or more).

The only options for doing free at Amazon with KDP is if your book is in KDP Select which allows 5 days of free for every 90 days in the program or to set it free elsewhere and get them to price match.
