Has everyone noticed how for the past two weeks there have been so many titles from famous post-war mystery/thriller writers for $1.99?

A Stained White Radiance (Dave Robicheaux #5) by James Lee Burke is today's NOOK Daily Find. $1.99

Quote:
“It’s impossible to think of the Louisiana bayou without conjuring up James Lee Burke’s Dave Robicheaux books” (Chicago Tribune), including this early masterwork that pits the Cajun police detective against one of the New South’s most twisted and powerful forces. Oil speculator Weldon Sonnier is the patriarch of a troubled family intimately bound to the CIA, the Mob, and the Klan. Now, the murder of a cop and a bizarre assassination attempt pull Robicheaux into the Sonniers’ hellish world of madness, murder, and incest. But Robicheaux has devils of his own— and they may just destroy the tormented investigator and the two people he holds most dear.

The Players' Boy Is Dead is the first in the Matthew and Joan Stock historical mystery series by Leonard Tourney. I read a few of these back in DTB days, and enjoyed them. It's a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 6 more days.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Players-Boy-De.../dp/B01DC7OEQS

Spoiler:
Quote:
'vividly evocative of its era.” - The People

Elizabethan England.

A country that is growing rich and powerful.

But, under the surface, there are matters savage and murderous, as well…

When a small players’ troupe come to perform for a lord and his lady, none of the rag-tag group shine more than the young players’ boy, with his flaxen hair and fine features.

The player boy had won a scullery maid’s heart, and it was she, at cock’s crow, who went searching for him in the stables where he slept.

But upon finding him dead - murdered in a most gruesome way - the maid’s heart is broken.

County Constable Matthew Stock, a humble clothier by trade, and his practical-minded wife Joan set about to get to the bottom of this horrendous crime.

Constable Matthew must search high and low, from a Lord’s castle to a disreputable inn, to find the person who dealt such an ungodly blow …

So impossible is the case that Matthew finds himself resenting the position of Constable, as every lead seems to be a dead end.

Magistrate Sir Henry Saltmarsh and his ominous secretary Varnell take great pleasure in scrutinising the honest Constable.

As their keen interest escalates, Matthew begins to suspect that they are less than honourable.

Between adulterous wives, less than holy priests and a brutally enforced political hierarchy, Constable Matthew has his work cut out for him if he is to keep his job and get justice for the murdered boy...

The Players' Boy Is Dead is a widely acclaimed mystery novel as rich in historical detail as it is in suspense.

Rx for Murder is the first in the Pharmacy series by Renee B. Horowitz. It's at $1.99 for about 1 more day.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Murder-Pharmac.../dp/B0047T7D2S

Spoiler:
Quote:
What did his prescription records reveal to convince pharmacist Ruthie Kantor Morris that Harry Stokes’s death was murder? As family members demand those records from Ruthie, suspicion shifts from the victim’s young wife to the Scottsdale, Arizona pharmacist herself. Soon Ruthie finds she must unmask the murderer or become the next victim. An authentic behind-the-scenes look at pharmacy with a clever and charming heroine make this first novel in the Rx series a fascinating mystery of manners.

Find Him Kill Him
by James Hogarth

It's just a normal working day at a factory in Japan...until an employee picks up a gun and systematically starts shooting his co-workers, before turning the weapon on himself.

Around the world on that same July day, similar mass shootings take place, leaving hundreds dead.

A mysterious entity named Crowbar, bent on worldwide anarchy, is behind it all.

first novel

Midnight Dancer by Annie Ayre

previously published as Hussy by Rosemary Kingsland.

At the upmarket London club, Baron's, Beaty is adrift in a twilight world where prostitution, drugs and death are a game for anyone prepared to pay the ultimate price.

Beaty dreams of a better life for her and her 10-year-old son, Billy.

But Beaty only sees her boy at weekends. Beaty's estranged ex-husband Jack was awarded custody of Billy because of Beaty's job.

Thanks for these, although from its description I'm not at all sure that "Midnight Dancer" is a mystery. Sounds more like romance.

Three Tony Hillerman Chee/Leaphorn titles are among the US Kindle Daily Deal titles, at $1.99 for today only. I really like this series, although I'm perhaps biased because my dad's family lives in this part of New Mexico.

The Blessing Way, #1
link: http://www.amazon.com/Blessing-Way-N.../dp/B000FC10VQ
Spoiler:
Quote:
Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high lonely place, a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer. There is palpable evil in the air, and Leaphorn's pursuit of a Wolf-Witch is leading him where even the bravest men fear, on a chilling trail that winds perilously between mysticism and murder.

Coyote Waits, #10
link: http://www.amazon.com/Coyote-Waits-N.../dp/B000FC119M
Spoiler:
Quote:
The car fire didn't kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez—a bullet did. And the old man in possession of the murder weapon is a whiskey-soaked shaman named Ashie Pinto. Officer Jim Chee is devastated by the slaying of his good friend Del, and confounded by the prime suspect's refusal to utter a single word of confession or denial.

Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believes there is much more to this outrage than what appears on the surface, as he and Jim Chee set out to unravel a complex weave of greed and death that involves a historical find and a lost fortune. But the hungry and mythical trickster Coyote is waiting, as always, in the shadows to add a strange and deadly new twist.

The Fallen Man, #12
link: http://www.amazon.com/Fallen-Man-Nav.../dp/B000FC11PQ
Spoiler:
Quote:
Human bones lie on a ledge under the peak of Ship Rock mountain, the remains of a murder victim undisturbed for more than a decade. Three hundred miles across the Navajo reservation, a harmless old canyon guide is felled by a sniper's bullet. Joe Leaphorn, recently retired from the Navajo Tribal Police, believes the shooter and the skeleton are somehow connected and recalls a chilling puzzle he was previously unable to solve. But Acting Lieutenant Jim Chee is too busy to take an interest in a dusty cold case ... until the reborn violence of it hits much too close to home.

Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph

Nightmares Can Be Murder is the first in the Taylor Blake/Dream Club series by Mary Kennedy. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Nightmares-Can...dp/B00IOE4MS0/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Dream Team

Business consultant Taylor Blake has returned to Savannah, Georgia, to help her sister Allison turn her dream of running an old-fashioned candy store into a reality. Allison is also interested in dream interpretation and invites Taylor to her Friday night Dream Club, where members meet once a week to share and analyze their dreams.

When a local dance instructor, Chico Hernandez, is found dead in his studio, and the murder scene has an eerie resemblance to one of the dreams shared at their meeting, Taylor can't help but be intrigued. And when her sister, who was briefly involved with the dance teacher, becomes the prime suspect, Taylor and their fellow club members can't be caught napping. It's up to them to dream up a solution to the murder before Allison faces a real-life nightmare.

The Iceberg is the fifth in the Richard Mariner thriller-ish looking series by Peter Tonkin. It is free right now at Kindle US.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Iceberg-Peter-...dp/B01552RW3A/

Spoiler:
Quote:
1986, Chernobyl.

General Valerii Gogol has been forced into a desperate gamble to avoid total nuclear meltdown — a gamble with appalling consequences.

Within weeks his terrible secret is shipped north to be discarded in the forbidding wastes of the Arctic Ocean. Frozen, far away from civilization, it is forgotten — for a time.

Years later, Richard Mariner of the Heritage Mariner Shipping Company is commissioned by the United Nations to tow a huge iceberg from the Arctic Circle to a drought-stricken state on the west coast of Africa.

As that same country simmer on the brink of civil war, Mariner struggles to deliver the life-saving colossus — unaware of the contamination at its heart.

Others, however, are not so ignorant.

As the iceberg nears the African coast, friends become enemies and formerly unified crews turn into deadly adversaries.

Within the confines of the ship, tensions rise and the race against time begins as General Gogol himself, now sick and dying, is ordered to halt its progress at all costs.

No matter who gets hurt — or killed.

The Iceberg is a compelling thriller set against the backdrop of the Chernobyl disaster and the raging civil wars of the African continent.

By the author of The Leper Ship, The Fire Ship, The Coffin Ship and The Bomb Ship in the same series.
