The problem is that if the DRM was changed, a lot of people would not be able to read new books on the device of their choice. And it would be possible that the publishers would insist on this DRM even for Amazon. So that means that for an eInk Reader to handle this new DRM, there would have to be new firmware that supports this new DRM. That means that everyone who has an a older Reader might never have access to this new DRM. Also, I cannot see Amazon going along with it as that would give up control.

A new DRM like that means we would lose so much that a lot of people would go back to pBooks and give up on eBooks.

That would only make sense if there was only one DRM scheme right now. The publishers obviously don't have the clout to insist on any one DRM scheme, or else why would they allow all of the different schemes already? The only way they could "insist" on any one thing would be if they conspired again. Do you really think that they would take that chance again?

Right now we have ADE's Adept DRM, B&N's eReader DRM that's been incorporated into ADE (not sure which version it started with), Kindle's Mobipocket type DRM for Mobi & KF8 all which can be removed.

There is also Apple's Fairplay DRM which cannot be removed.

These are the major DRM versions used and I really don't see another DRM being a major player.

You forgot about Kobo's DRM for Kepubs. There's also whatever Scribd uses, and the different DRM schemes that use watermarking. I think there's also others that I'm not remembering.

And Google Play Books uses its own internal DRM.

I would mention Oyster and other niche DRMs, but we're limiting this discussion to the majors.

People keep posting that Apple's Fairplay DRM can not be removed. As I have said a number of time, it can be removed and it can be removed with commercial software.

I buy from them. I can remove them all by the way of ADE?

Google and Kobo books can be downloaded using ADE and anything using ADE 2.01 are good to go.

I don't see how something can be "open source" if part of it is hidden from the end user. Calibre is Open Source as I understand it, meaning that the end user can see all the source code and tweak it to make plug-ins that can be added on. If the entire source code wasn't available to the end user though how could that be possible?

The source code of the application can be open source, but that doesn't necessitate the release of the encryption keys, which are what provide the actual security. They are data, not source code.

Yes, I did leave that out. It can be removed. So there's not many different DRM methods in use that cannot be removed. I didn't even think of Scribed as I don't use it. Watermarking can be removed.

Google Play Books are ePub and use standard Adobes Adept DRM.

Perhaps the publishers don't share your view that the most desirable attribute of a digital rights management mechanism is that people should be able to easily bypass it, Jon?

But if the publishers change the existing DRM, then all the software used to read DRMed eBooks would have to be changed and that's not an easy thing to do. That would cause a fiasco.

Not internally, no. Gepub is like Koub in that it does not use Adobe DRM.

Go read my comment again:
