kindle dxg wireless

I was recently giving a Kindle DX. It is a U.S. version, so the wireless won't work here in Canada. I purchased a motherboard for Kindle DXG, and installed in with a wireless module I had from a Kindle Keyboard -- it is the same one used in the DXG, I verified that. I used the SIM card that came with the motherboard (and I also tried others)

Here's my problem. I can get a weak 3G connection, which I verified by going to the Kindle Store. But I am unable to register the Kindle. Each time I try, with my Amazon sign-in info, I get a message that the Kindle is unable to connect. I've tried a few dozen times, tried restarts, changed SIM cards. No love.

When I check the 611, it confirms that I am connected to the Telus network, the same one that works here for my Kindle Keyboards. Maybe I screwed up the antenna connection? Is there any known reason I can't seem to register it? I like to get newspapers delivered to my Kindles, and this big sucker would be great for that.

Is it up to date? If it's not running the latest version (i.e., 2.5.8), it won't be able to communicate w/ Amazon over HTTPS, which I guess is required to register .

If you switched the storage chip, did you properly clone the right credentials?

Nope. Don't even know what you mean! The curious thing it that I "fake" registered it [ https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87686 ], and I am able to use the browser to search Google, etc. But, as I stated, when I try to register, it won't even connect. My 3G connection is less active (one bar or two) then is that on my Kindle Keyboards, which have the same wireless module in them.

NiLuJe, I changed the motherboard. I didn't switch anything. The motherboard didn't come with a wireless module, but I had one that was the right one for DXG.

Your 3G card, sim, motherboard and the correct firmware are a matched set.

And there are three firmwares -

So first step is to see which model you have: B004, B005, or B009

It's a B009. The motherboard came with the last firmware already installed. Like I said, all I did was add the wireless module, which works. The SIM card was installed in the motherboard (I did try changing it with others).

Now I can take the damn thing apart again, as one of the screws that hold the back on has a stripped head. Superglue the screwdriver to the screw -- the last resort, when the space is very confined -- no room for pliers or cutting a new grove in the screw head. I shouldn't complain -- it works fine, and, with the fake registration hack, I have all my options for reading. I just won't be able to read my NYTimes on it, which is no big deal as I have several Kindle Keyboards which work.

The most recent update does not change the version number.
Where it probably should show as 2.5.8.1, it remains at 2.5.8
Browse the Amazon firmware listings for your model until you find the 'caup ....' - something like that, it will have 'ca' at the start.

Thanks for that, but still not working. The fact that the 3G shows a much weaker connection than my Kindle Keyboards with exactly the same wireless module makes me think something is wrong there. I'll try swapping the module and checking that antenna connection (it has a fragile little wire at the center of the plug -- maybe I mashed it during installation). But I need to get the thing apart again without breaking it.

By the way, it looks really funny now. It has the while buttons of the Kindle DX with the graphite front plate. Funny.

That is a very tiny piece of coax, which very easy to crush, kink, crimp, look at sideways . . . .

LOL! Success! I went outside, pointed my Kindle at the sun, and again tried to register it, and it worked!! It must have been the firmware update that did it.

Thanks so much for that. Maybe it is because I'm older, but I love getting these old Kindles to work. I have a racing bike, chrome moly frame, that is over 40 years old! I had to get a tool to remove the bottom bracket from a machinist in London. The bike is still great, but the frame has lost all its rigidity -- good for commuting, and no one steals it!

Also, the 3G indicator now gets 3 bars. The internet connection was limited until the device was truly registered (fake registration did not accomplish this).

Hello! Could you please give me an advice how to get work my us b004 in Europe? What part should I replace with what? Item works as a charm, but as i cannot register it, its quite disabled. Thank you for your help. Regards Pataki
