Another fine mess you've got me into! I had to buy that, especially as I remember seeing him in a promo for the Dick Van Dyke Show Reunion 11 years ago. He was 79 then, and did an onstage kick over his head that I couldn't replicate as a young man.

I don't know if WT did it intentionally, but there is a strong connection between Dick van Dyke and Stan Laurel, so it was a pretty appropriate juxtaposition...

Dick Van Dyke ("Van Dyke" is not a surname, by the way--it means "from Dyke." So you would call him either "Dick" or "Dick Van Dyke," but not "Van Dyke") is a remarkable man. Coincidentally, I thought about him early this afternoon, before I knew what the Audible deal of the day is. To reach 90 is a momentous event. But as remarkable is the fact that he was still so limber even when he had gotten old (he may still be limber, I just haven't seen him recently).

I can't help but think that his sanguine personality has a great deal to do with his longevity. Unfortunately, much of that is part of a person's temperament with which he or she is born, but we could all help ourselves by cultivating that characteristic.

Oh, c'mon. Leonardo's surname is not da Vinci; Joan's surname isn't d'Arc, or of Arc. But no matter what its origins, Dick Van Dyke's surname, both legally and practically, is Van Dyke.

Carry that to its logical end and no one has a surname.
