Since Feb I got the Fire 10, Amazon Phone, & PW3!!! Thankfully this one just too high priced for me or I would cave also.... Bad thing is I haven't maxed out my Credit card yet! ugh so tempting...

I voted "Maybe" ... if some things change.

Price should go down, but for me as a vegan the most important thing would actually be that I do not want to buy a piece of mummified animal hide as part of an e-reader.

So as long as they are only offering it with the obligatory leather charging cover, I will not look at getting one.

And, of course, my Paperwhite is still awesome for reading...

Off topic:

Leather that is mummified, I doubt anybody would want that. Leather is actually rather the oppositie of mummifed, as it's not dried up and shriveled. To make leather, you actually need to replace the water with fat [or whatever substance they use these days] so it'll stay pliable.

---

My answer to the poll: no, nope, nada. Too little to offer for this price. They made some design choices that we* don't like, such as the small battery in the reader itself and the fact that it's not waterproof. Those choices combined with the price is an absolute no.

I won't be buying it. My 2nd Gen Paperwhite is still working flawlessly. In addition, I don't like the design of the Oasis and it is too expensive.

I like it, but it's too expensive. I might be willing to pay that much for a waterproof ereader, as the only ereader I've broken met its fate after falling into snow and waterproofing would have saved it, but I won't spend $300 for another reader that could break so easily.

I'm reserving judgement until I get my review unit, but it looks like a very interesting departure from the conventional form factor they've been exploring.

My initial reaction is that it's a step back aesthetically, but it also seems like it's a better ergonomic experience for one-handed case-less reading, which happens to be one of my preferred reading setups.

The price is high, but I also think this isn't a device marketed at "everyone" the way the Paperwhite is so they'll probably get away with it. And the case is included, so that offsets the cost a bit.

I continue to think that waterproofing is more valuable on a spec sheet than in the real world, but to each their own. I'm not at all bothered by its absence, but I do think they chose a strange name for the device considering they didn't waterproof it.

I wrote up my initial impressions if anyone's interested.

Well, only for anyone who likes the case and would buy it anyway I don't find it particularly nice and I've never bought an Amazon case for any of my Kindles, it's always been 3rd party ones all the way back to the K3.

The Only Amazon case I bought turned out to be junk... For my Fire 10" I have a Whole thread about it. Amazon Removed it from their site cause the reviews were so Bad. Does Not bode well for me trusting another Amazon case.

Marius I read your review ...sorry it sounds like all the others I read or watched.

Thanks, Katie but it isn't a review—the device isn't shipping yet just an initial impressions post based on the information we've got about it thus far. The review will come after I've been able to spend some quality time with the Oasis and compare it to its predecessors.

Mostly I just wanted to comment on what I see as the key problems: the waterproofing angle and the difficulty in justifying the expense for a device that's so focused.

Very good point. I personally like the official cases, especially the Origami one for the Voyage (unconventional but it's extremely practical in its ability to have the device propped up on either side).

They're expensive compared to the third-party alternatives though, as usual.

One Key Problem No One is mentioning is How Easy it can break! Lets face it main reason to buy a case it to protect the reader. This case Fails to do that & the design makes it easy for the thin side to snap off.

To be fair, we don't know how easy or difficult it is to break until the real thing is put through some stress testing.

The press release did talk about the frame being reinforced with metal for additional durability to offset the thinness, so it's probably not as fragile as it looks at first glance.

Here's a direct quote:

Quote:
Kindle Oasis has a featherweight polymer frame that is plated with metal by structural electroplating—this makes the device incredibly light while ensuring it has the strength and rigidity of metal so it is resilient enough to take anywhere you want to read.
