Dump the screen protector. It's not needed with an eInk screen. The cost would actually be $499.97.

There are people who want to read by the pool or at the beach, or even just take the Reader outside where it could get wet if it rained. Being waterproof given them a peace of mind.

I actually like the fact that the cover of my book-style case on the KPW1 swings flush against the back, so the Kindle basically represents one page. I've actually started to find it annoying to read a normal book because it's so wide :X Some time ago, while reading paper book, I've also wondered why the story took such a weird turn with unfinished sentences... then I realized that I forgot to read the left page

The oasis is a massive scam, more fool anyone paying full price for it.
The question though is how is the contrast of the eInk screen with the plastic substrate? It needs to be comparable to the Carta screen or it won't sell. I doubt it's up to Carta standards. Also, could the screen come in a high enough resolution?

Hah! I've tapped on pages of a physical book before (as well as fumbled to grasp the corner of the "page" on electronic devices).

It is a Carta screen.

On the Oasis product page:

Amazon’s 6" Paperwhite display technology with E Ink Carta™ and built-in light, 300 ppi, optimized font technology, 16-level gray scale

Curious that they say Paperwhite display. I suppose the screen is just like that of a PW3. (And not like a Voyage?)

What I was saying is for a plastic backed screen to sell, it has to be as good looking and hi-res as a Carta screen. If it's not, then I cannot see Amazon using such.

All new Kindle with lower resolution and less contrast.

I don't think that would sell.

I would think waterproofing an Oasis would be difficult if not impossible because of the need to ensure that the connection points to the case are not recessed.

I'm French, and so didn't grow up with Blue Peter (or Jackanory )

Well it was an early prototype and I didn't have any double-sided tape at hand. Just for giggles, I've had a nosey at battery packs and seen a rather compact one with a built in USB cable which could make things quite tidy however these only seems to come in 2500 or 3000mAh capacity compared to the 5000mAh one as per the picture (the PW built-in battery is about 1500mAh I believe). There's some solar-powered ones too but without built-in USB cable and they are also rather bulky.
