Moving from Nook to Kobo

Hey guys,

I'm currently using my first e-reader, a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight and I still love it. But the cracked screen and a deal on a Kobo Aura ($50 on eBay!) finally got me to buy a new one.

I'll do a bunch of research before it arrives, but I just had two simple(?) questions:

1: Is there any advantage to converting my ePubs to kepubs?
(If it matters, all my books are Alfed DRM-free ePubs. I love my Nook, but I buy from Amazon.)

2: Can I just swap my SD card from my Nook to my Kobo? Or is it not that simple?

for sideloaded books converting them to kepubs pretty much just gives tracking information, like time to finish chapter/book, sort of thing.

if the books on your SD card are DRM free then yes, if they are ones with DRM you'll either need to strip them or ensure that the Kobo is registered to whatever DRM scheme. Most likely Adobe.

If they are books you purchased through BN and have them on your SD card you'll need to strip the DRM since Nook switched their DRM scheme some time back.

edit- I now see your books are already DRM free, so yea just throw the sd card in your Kobo, it'll process them and you're all set. Leaving this message as is for future folks who find it by either googling or searching the forum.

There are a few reasons to use kepubs other than the in book stats:

- Different rendering engine. I'm not going to make any attempt to say which is better.
- Links to footnotes will open as a pop-up
- Images can be enlarged.
- Page count can be per-chapter.
- Highlighting for annotations works a little better.

Personally, I usually sideload epub but, if the book comes from Kobo, I usually read the downloaded kepub. I have converted a few books from other sources that had lots of pictures and footnotes.

Good deal!

I like to use kepubs, which Calibre converts on the fly as I load the books to the device. I suggest you try both. Either way, you will want to use the Kobo Utilities plugin with Caliber. I would not want to use a Kobo without that!

As a straight epub reader, it's hard to beat Kobo.

I love my almost 1 year old Aura and hope that you have a similar good experience. From playing with Nooks in the store I think the Aura has a better feel to it. I like the KePub format.

A concern with buying through eBay is that Kobo may not honor a warranty on an eBay sale - I think it depends on how well the ownership can be traced. Be sure to have a good copy of the sales receipt available in case you ever need to deal with KOBO Customer Service.

I moved from Nook simple touch without glo light to Kobo Aura H2O about 6 months ago. I loved my Nook, but the lack of screen light has forced me to abandon it for a new H2O.

I have just copied all my epub collections which were on Nook, to H2O using calibre, and I had no problems.

Now I enjoy my H2O very much.

That has me a little worried. I broke my original Nook screen in a car mishap and bought a used one off of eBay and had no concerns about how well it would work. Whatever else people feel about Nook, they are pretty damn solid. The only reason I'm replacing it now is because my replacement feel victim to the dreaded screen tear.

I'd suggest moving all your ebooks into Calibre, reformatting the SD card using the SD Card Association's SD Formatter, installing it in your Kobo and then using Calibre to move all the ebooks back to the Kobo.

This is based on the one person I knew who tried to move from using a Nook to using a Kobo and transferred the SD card only to find some odd issues. After the above process, all was happy.

It would be a lot easier if the Kobo just used the same rendering engine across the board. Is there any way to force it to do so without converting your entire library to kepub? I have nearly 800 epubs in my collection, and the thought of converting and transferring them all back to my Aura is not an attractive one, especially when I'd really like to keep the "Read" tags intact.

I did a simple A/B comparison between epub and kepub using the ESV Global Study Bible which is a particularly complex file (thousands of embedded links), and the kepub version does seem to open and operate faster, I assume because it's using the kepub rendering engine.

If there was a way to force the Aura to always use that engine even with epubs, that would be great. Actually, what would be ideal is a software switch that allows you to change the rendering engine on the fly.

I use kepub because the page change is much quicker than with an epub on my kobo glo HD.
