Amazon announces Kindle Oasis

Here's a video (in French; I've no idea what he's saying!). At the 1:10 mark he holds the Oasis a bit too far tipped backward, and it flips the text on him. So there's a sample of how far you can move it while laying down in bed. I'm not sure the direction is the one you would be moving it, but it might be a helpful thing to see.

(I'm trying to see the port on the cover, but nobody seems to care much about the cover on these videos. However, I *am* getting less in love with some of the red versions, which depends on the dye lot, and more fond of the brown!)

So, according to someone who has held one in his hand, the Oasis cover (as well as the Oasis) both have USB charging ports. I guess it's possible he was given a prototype and not the finished product, but that seems to be a stretch.

In his Video he said it needed the reader to charge the case. Maybe he needs to correct his video.

I am guessing that Amazon believes it is not a viable product if its not bundled with the case.

As designed, the naked ereader has less battery life than some tablets, albiet much lighter than those tablets.

As I and others have said, the rated battery life is seven hours. However, I believe the realistic life is less for those who turn pages frequently. I believe there is a chance that it naked reader would not last on a cross-country (U.S.) flight and would definitely have problems on most inter-continental trips.

So, I suspect Amazon feels a case is required. One option that they would have had, however, would have been to sell it with faux-leather for $40 less.

2 great ideas:
1) if the cover has his own usb port, then maybe you can keep it plugged in and clip the Oasis in the cover to charge. Might be easier than putting a usb cable in the device itself.

2) How long until 3rd party cases for the Voyage show up that have an extra wedge on one side, extend the edge to make the side with the wedge longer, stuff a battery in the wedge for slightly extra weight in the wedge and include a short usb cable so the battery in wedge can plug in to the Voyage. Rinse and repeat for the PW.

I was just in Best Buy they hadn't even heard of the Oasis! They even looked it up! So What Best Buy are you talking about?... OK I Found it they must have just added it.

That's just a screw up on BB's part I think. On Amazon it lists the same specs as their other readers "4GB, Holds thousands of books".

Their database probably did not allow 1000s or thousands.

When I thanked Len Edgerly for answering the question and explained why I was asking it, he wrote ...

"The cover's USB charges the cover and the Oasis at the same time when they are connected. Or you can charge them separately. It's pretty cool."

Can't get much clearer than that.

I -- personally -- haven't been able to see the USB port on the cover (or even where it would be). But I tend to take the word of someone who is actually using the device over guessing. I suppose it's possible he could be living in an alternate reality -- or have a prototype Oasis not released to the public.
