If you don't mind downloading them individually, you can save yourself $1.99 by downloading them from Project Gutenberg.

This book was converted from its physical edition to the digital format by a community of volunteers. You may find it for free on the web. Purchase of the Kindle edition includes wireless delivery. I wonder if this means Amazon regularly grabs the mobi editions from Project Gutenberg and makes them available for free? If so, I wonder how often they look for new editions, or if they just did a one-time import into their system? |

That's an interesting question. Checking the preview on Amazon, I don't see the front matter that Gutenberg uses, unless it's at the end of the book. |

As long as it's in the public domain, according to the Gutenberg license, you're allowed to strip all the Gutenberg related information. Since Amazon has a process to convert html to Kindle formats, it would be easy enough to automate stripping the Gutenberg pre/post material and regenerate the Kindle ebook. Whether they actually do that, and do it on a regular basis, only Amazon knows.

Amazon don't do it but the self-publishers do. They usually add a clickable TOC. See posts here about weird Greekie names with copyright lines <dead author> 2016. For example (currently free) Freckles (Xist Classics) by Gene Stratton-Porter http://www.amazon.com/Freckles-Xist-...dp/B00XUR383Q/ And collected works for a small sum http://www.amazon.com/Gene-Stratton-...dp/B01D5FCIQU/ |

The Man Who Cried I Am by John A. Williams
$1.99 Amazon Kobo Nook A black expat writer uncovers a sinister plot to destroy the American civil rights movement in this exceptionally powerful novel, which includes an introduction by bestselling author Walter Mosley. On a warm spring afternoon in 1964, Max Reddick sits at an outdoor café in Amsterdam, nursing a glass of Pernod. Along with the large doses of morphine running through his veins, the alcohol allows him to forget the painful disease ravaging his body, but it also prompts him to reflect on the circumstances that have brought him to this point—made him who he is today. From the streets of New York City to the jazz clubs of Paris and Amsterdam, from the battlefields of World War II to the Oval Office, Max’s journey as an African American author and journalist has brought him into the nexus of hypocrisy and duplicity surrounding segregation and civil rights time and again. But nothing he has encountered could have prepared him for the devastating and dangerous truth he now faces. Through the eyes of Max, with penetrating fictional portraits of Richard Wright, James Baldwin, and Malcolm X, among other historical figures, author John A. Williams reveals the hope, courage, and bitter disappointment of African American intellectuals in the postwar era. Infused with powerful artistry and searing anger, as well as insight, humanity, and vision, The Man Who Cried I Am is a modern American classic. |

FREE Modernized, First Folio Edition of Hamlet.
In commemoration, observance, or something, of the 400th anniversary of The Bard's death (ack!!!!) coming up real soon, I've been running across quite a few Shakespeare-related items. This is one of them.
It is a play, yes, but it's also a book. A quite substantial book, for that matter, with 219 pages. It's free, in the pdf format, from an outfit called Players-Shakespeare.com. I know almost nothing about these things, but it seems that this version of Hamlet is modernized and from the "First Folio." You do have to go through a checkout/shopping cart experience to get this ebook, but it's quick. There is an area to put your credit card information, but you do not have to fill that area in to get this free ebook. Hope this is a good find. Title: Hamlet. Format(s): Pdf. Author(s): William Shakespeare. Publisher: Players-Shakespeare.com. Pages: 219. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. Book Description (from the ebook): Derived from the OUP First Folio edition . . . . The OUP First Folio texts were originally prepared by Trevor Howard-Hill for use in his single colume concordances to Shakespeare (OUP, 1969f). They have since been reformatted to modern standards and carefully proofread by staff of Oxford University Press' Shakespeare Department for use in the new "Old Spelling" Oxford Shakespeare . . . . Comments: I believe that this is a legal free download based, in part, upon the fact that inside the book there is this statement: "Distributed by Players-Shakespeare.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License." Visit this webpage for more information about this particular license. URL: https://players-shakespeare.com/down...-adobe-reader/. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-18-2016 at 04:55 PM. |
