I dunno what goes at Kobo!!

I try to invite a friend using the $10/$5 promo and can't get it to work because it never gets to the screen where I'd actually enter my friend's email address. So, my friend starts a new account believing the info in the photo below, and instead of getting a $5 credit gets a 40% off promo code.

So, how confusing is it to work at Kobo, because it's darn confusing to be a customer!!

How do you check out in the Kobo South Africa store with a US credit card? I'm trying to pre-order the new Nora Roberts book which is significantly cheaper in the SA store.

I haven't had any problems using an Australian credit card globally at Kobo.

hannahi have you established a Sth African Kobo account? If so, then your credit card details just get entered in the usual place and you proceed the usual way you would to pre-order. That is, on the screen containing the book you want you just click on the pre-order button (or whatever it's called). No money comes off until the day of the book's release.

Note, in Sth Africa you will be charged their VAT.

Or is something else bothering you about the process?

Yep. I used to get Smashwords titles at Kobo with coupon codes. If they're the same price, I'll get them at Smashhwords.

For most others I now buy at Amazon.

Well, I changed my payment address to South Africa but I didn't save my credit card (billed to my US address). I entered my credit card at checkout only but the system wouldn't accept a non-US address. Then when I changed my address back to SA at checkout in the billing screen, I got the message that this title was not available in my area. I used to have my main Kobo account set up to Norfolk Island where I could use PayPal and almost any book was couponable, miss those days!

The check out screen has changed over the past 2 days. It appears a VPN is now needed to assist in travel.

South Africa uses PayPal, so my suggestion is to start a Sth Africa account.

I'm getting popups about changing/not changing my country. The address is automatically resetting to my IP location and then the prices are being updated with the geo location.

When I logged in with a VPN from the country I was purchasing from I no longer had the issue as was able to pay with my credit card.

BTW, S. Africa is still using the older checkout screen. NZ is using the new one.


EDIT: At the moment I am no longer seeing the new checkout. Incidentally, the new checkout now allows you to enter coupon codes before completing the payment info which is nice if you happen to have a credit to spend.

Okay, I see the see the new NZ and US checkout screens, but haven't been blocked. But, I wouldn't know for sure unless I actually clicked to purchase the book.

I'm wondering if I can still use the new checkout without vpn because AU is still on the old checkout (for the moment, anyway!) .....

Yikes, what a pain to have to use vpn!
