Hmmmmm. Good point there. On weekends when I'm in a good book, I might read from noon to 11:00. Sometimes that's 20% of the Voyage's battery (seems to use more battery with this latest firmware version, grrr). I'm turning pages pretty rapidly, reading about a book per day (on weekends), at a not very small font ( my eyes are aging too). I wonder if I would be forced to go get the Oasis cover at hour 7 or so.

It *might* still be worth it, to have 7 hours of ergonomically beneficial reading (I'm only 59, but meds are aging me). We'll see. With the shipping delay, I'm going to wait a skosh before I order anyway. Since I can't get it soon, no matter what.

Too bad about not listening to the podcast, because he interviews members of the design team (the Vice President, for one) and asked about waterproofing, which some want, but he said it added weight to the device, and they weren't interested in that. He also asked about solar charging, which was a rumor at first, and he said they hadn't been able to find a good enough battery, I guess that fit the parameters they set. Also talked a bit about their philosophy in designing new Kindles.

So, guess I'm looking at a Kobo for my next ereader. When does Kobo usually announce new tech? Mayish, right?
Kobo usually announce about now for a late April/early May release or in September for an October release. There is another thread discussing a rumour of a release, but, nothing has come and I don't think one will be coming.

And as has been mentioned, the last two Kobo's released did not have an external SD card. I suspect they will continue this for the 6" ereaders. The 6.8" readers have tended to be upmarket devices, so I think they will continue with the card in them.

Does anyone know if the automatic screen flipping can be switched off easily? I predict an annoyance reading in bed with the Oasis lying on your side...
(apologies if someone else answered this)

As far as I can tell, there's no way to turn of auto flipping.

But it will not change orientation (between Portrait and Landscape) as a tablet or smartphone does. It remains in Portrait or Landscape according to the 'Page' orientation Display Option. If you switch hands or roll over while you are horizontal, you may need to 're-orient' the device by pointing the desired 'top of screen' towards the sky/ceiling. Probably that will become automatic after a while.

If you read while hanging by your feet from the ceiling (in the manner of vampires), it will be a problem. Vampires may want to stick with the Voyage.

For $290, is it an ad-free device?

No. For $310 it is an ad free device. See the first page or two of this thread, where there was confusion about different links being posted, some to "with ads" and some to "without ads" pricing.

Oh OK... I thought they said $310 was the original price, and $290 was a special offer.

Notice how form wins out over functionality.

Jeff is obsessing about "thin" the way Jobs used to. What a shame.
