$2.95 -- The Pumpkin Plan -- Mike Michalowicz/ M Michalowicz --> 6.1 hrs/ R-4.5 --> leadership

Quote:
The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field

Whispersync: the Audible book is $2.95, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($16.99)

Each year Americans start one million new businesses, nearly 80 percent of which fail within the first five years. Under such pressure to stay alive - Let alone grow - it’s easy for entrepreneurs to get caught up in a never-ending cycle of “sell it - do it, sell it - do it” that leaves them exhausted, frustrated, and unable to get ahead no matter how hard they try. This is the exact situation Mike Michalowicz found himself in when he was trying to grow his first company. Although it was making steady money, there was never very much left over and he was chasing customers left and right, putting in twenty-eight-hour days, eight days a week. The punishing grind never let up. His company was alive but stunted, and he was barely breathing.

That’s when he discovered an unlikely source of inspiration - pumpkin farmers. After reading an article about a local farmer who had dedicated his life to growing giant pumpkins, Michalowicz realized the same process could apply to growing a business. He tested the Pumpkin Plan on his own company and transformed it into a remarkable, multimillion-dollar industry leader. First he did it for himself. Then for others. And now you.

So what is the Pumpkin Plan?
* Plant the right seeds: Don’t waste time doing a bunch of different things just to please your customers. Instead, identify the thing you do better than anyone else and focus all of your attention, money, and time on figuring out how to grow your company doing it.
* Weed out the losers: In a pumpkin patch small, rotten pumpkins stunt the growth of the robust, healthy ones. The same is true of customers. Figure out which customers add the most value and provide the best opportunities for sustained growth. Then ditch the worst of the worst.
* Nurture the winners: Once you figure out who your best customers are, blow their minds with care. Discover their unfulfilled needs, innovate to make their wishes come true, and overdeliver on every single promise.

Full of stories of other successful entrepreneurs, The Pumpkin Plan guides you through unconventional strategies to help you build a truly profitable blue-ribbon company that is the best in its field.

$1.99 -- Call the Nurse -- Mary MacLeod/ Gwen Hughes --> 10.3 hrs/ R-3.8 --> memoir

Quote:
Call the Nurse: True Stories of a Country Nurse in Scotland's Western Isles

Whispersync: the Audible book is $1.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($1.99)

Audible Editor Reviews -- Mary J. MacLeod's line of work allows her a uniquely intimate window into the lives of the insular rural community she left London for in the 1970s. Gwen Hughes' conversational tone suits MacLeod's frank style and closes the gap to allow each listener to feel as though the nurse is personally sharing her stories on a house call.

The anecdotes in Call the Nurse range from tragedy to humor but are always handled with the love MacLeod clearly feels toward the island's residents, their foibles, old-fashioned way of life, and the mythically beautiful landscape that left her enchanted.

Publisher's Summary -- Recalling the classic works by James Herriot and the new British hit Call the Midwife, a nurse’s heartwarming adventures with her family while practicing in rural Scotland.

Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband, George, encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud and startled owners of a near-derelict croft house - a farmer’s stone cottage - on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends.

In anecdotes that are by turns funny, sad, moving, and tragic, she recalls them all, the crofters and their laird, the boatmen and tradesmen, young lovers and forbidding churchmen. Against the old-fashioned island culture and the grandeur of mountain and sea unfold indelible stories: a young woman carried through snow for airlift to the hospital; a rescue by boat; the marriage of a gentle giant and the island beauty; a ghostly encounter; the shocking discovery of a woman in chains; the flames of a heather fire at night; an unexploded bomb from World War II; and the joyful, tipsy celebration of a ceilidh. Gaelic fortitude meets a nurse’s compassion in these wonderful true stories from rural Scotland.

Max: Best Friend. Hero. Marine.

Whispersync: the Audible book is $2.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($1.99)

When Justin's older brother, Kyle, is killed in Afghanistan, Justin can't believe that his brother is really gone. Except there's one thing that Kyle left behind....

Max is a highly trained military canine who has always protected his fellow soldiers. But when he loses his handler and best friend, Kyle, Max is traumatized and unable to remain in the service. Max is sent home to America, where the only human he connects with is Justin, and he is soon adopted by Kyle's family, essentially saving his life.

At first Justin has no interest in taking care of his late brother's troubled dog. However, the two learn to trust each other, which helps the four-legged veteran become his heroic self once more. As the pair start to unravel the mystery of what really happened to Kyle, they find more excitement - and danger - than they bargained for. But they might also find an unlikely new best friend - in each other.

Yes. And no. And yes.

Yes, I got in on the sale. I was lucky there. I got three The Great Courses audios at half price.

But no, because for some reason I saw very few that were as much as half off. (I'm having a serious case of deja vu (and I'm not talking about the arcane ebook format which goes by that or a very similar name) right now. I think that this has happened to me in the past. Now if it happens to me again, I'll definitely remember it then).

And yes. Because having so few half-off choices caused me to buy several less than I would have, giving me quite a few $$$$$ in net savings. And I've got so many audiobooks to listen to now, that even though I regularly listen to them, and even if I quit buying anymore right now, I think that I already would need to have at least a couple of more lifetimes to finish listening to them all!

You didn't really want all that much information in a reply, did you?

I can't pass them up when they're on sale, if they are on subjects that I'm interested in and--this is all important--have very good reviews and ratings (I also try to look over the previews of the ebook version, but I don't always get that done).

I don't know how many other people are like this, but I'm more of a library-builder than a person who buys an audiobok when I actually want to listen to that particular book. When I want something to listen to, I look around my libraries (Audible, Downpour, et al.), find something that piques my interest, and start listening.

Here's a problem that occurs, though, because of my buying pattern: I sometimes forget that I have already bought the audiobook, and end up buying it again! There is a retailer or too that will lock me out from purchasing an audiobook a second time, or at least ask me if I really want to buy that audiobook again. But, most don't. And if I'm buying from a different retailer, well I get no warning at all, of course. In the situation where one or both are CD's, I'm going to put one on eBay one of these days. I hope that I don't find that I have three (or more!) copies of the same audiobook! Sometimes I wish that I had a photographic memory . . . .

$3.95 -- Cry, the Beloved Country -- Alan Paton/ Michael York --> 9.8 hrs/ R-4.2 --> literary

Quote:
Whispersync: the Audible book is $3.95, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($12.99)

This is the most distinguished novel that has come out of South Africa in the 20th century, and it is one of the most important novels that has appeared anywhere in modern times. Cry, the Beloved Country is in some ways a sad book; it is an indictment of a social system that drives native races into resentment and crime; it is a story of Fate, as inevitable, as relentless, as anything of Thomas Hardy's. Beautifully wrought with high poetic compassion, Cry, the Beloved Country is more than just a story, it is a profound experience of the human spirit. And beyond the intense and insoluble personal tragedy, it is the story of the beautiful and tragic land of South Africa, its landscape, its people, and its bitter racial ferment and unrest.
