Most of the Colorado Plateau will have no connection unless you have a phone with wifi calling and can use a motel's wifi. You see people "war driving" at night to get online.

Areas on the interstates have no signal for some carriers. TMO is putting in Band 12(700)
to help out with that.

Moab, UT used to have signs posted in the motels - "if you can't see the LaSals, you have no cell service" Still very true if offroading or canyoneering. Need satellite. If you are camping in the back of beyond, you need to download all your new books before you go.

I prefer wifi only tablets.

Where my in-laws live on the Chesapeake in Virginia. They have no internet, by choice, and you have to drive to town to pick up a decent cell signal.
Shoot, I'm in the Charlotte, NC area. If I had to depend on my cell signal in my house I would be in big trouble. All cell reception is spotty at best in my neighborhood, and I live in a very developed area. My parents in no-where Tennessee get better cell reception than this neighborhood for some reason!

Try holidays in Wales! No signal anywhere unless the place you are staying in has WiFi.

I didn't assume anything and I too have lived in remote places around the Middle East and managed to always find a mobile line.

Anyway I get it there are many places where there is no cell phone service,I have just never come across one in all my years of travel, push comes to shove there is always satellite, not ideal but gets the job done.

It's still a rarity though mind .

What we're saying is that it really ISN'T a rarity, at least not in the U.S., outside of the cities.

What do you mean there is always satellite?
Do you mean Hughes or Dish net?
You cannot easily take them with you.
They are also expensive.

Yes 3g is a rarity.
Not everyone has a mobile home to set up that satellite receiver while traveling.
You may not have any problems connecting anywhere to the internet.
But most of us do.
You are the exception not the rule.

I do know many places you couldn't do your satellite.
Any Texas state park campsite without electricity between 10 pm and 6 am.
That is quiet time and generators are usually not allowed during those hours.

Or Big Bend National park.
It is all primitive.

I don't think that satellite is really that viable:

I'm not all that well traveled, but I have been to some very rural places in the upper Midwest US, and I know lots of places with no cell service, and I don't know how one would just simply have satellite service to take around with them.

Or in the UK. Mobile companies will not put up masts in rural areas. I actually live in quite a populated area with a 50 minute drive to a large shopping complex and even then we drive through an area of zero coverage as well as bits that get only GPRS.

2g. Before 3g came along it was for many years the wireless speed standard in the United States. The first iPhone ran on 2g, and for many years the major data carriers in the United States (Verizon, ATT) had larger 2g footprints than 3 or 4g.

Just curious, what do you folks like about liquivista? I haven't kept up with them, but I did just google and view their product demo video.

I'm, guessing that it is not fast enough to replace a tablet/Fire so we are talking about reading applications only?

It looks like it would be good for magazines, manga and textbooks -- is that right?

For text-based fiction does it have any advantage?

Much faster page turn speeds. Better contrast.

At least, that seems to be the advantages. Since a product using LiquaVista has never been released, one can't be certain.

Mirasol looked like great technology until it appeared in a product and the really poor viewing angles became apparent.

So untrue. We had some good retailers before Apple and the price fix five. Fictionwise was doing quite well and lots of MR members bought from there. They had a business model that worked very well but could not work under agency pricing. BooksOnBoard was another good shop welost due to agency pricing. Agency killed BOB's business model as well. There are other shops that are no longer in business due to agency.

So please, don't say agency is good. It's never been good and never will be good.
