$1.99 -- Farewell: Greatest Spy Story -- Kostin, Raynaud/ Morey --> 15.2 hrs/ R-3.7 --> espionage

Quote:
Farewell: The Greatest Spy Story of the Twentieth Century

Whispersync: the Audible book is $1.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($1.99)

1981: Ronald Reagan’s inauguration marks a new escalation in the United States’ Cold War with the USSR. Months later, François Mitterrand is elected president of France with the support of the French Communist Party. The predicted tension between these two men, however, is immediately defused when Mitterrand gives Reagan the Farewell dossier, a file he would later call "one of the greatest spy cases of the 20th century".

Vladimir Ippolitovich Vetrov, a promising technical student, joins the KGB to work as a spy. Following a couple of murky incidents, however, Vetrov is removed from the field and placed at a desk as an analyst. Soon, burdened by a troubled marriage and frustrated at a failing career, Vetrov turns to alcohol. Desperate and in need of redemption, in 1980 he offers his services to the DST, the French counterintelligence service. Thus Agent Farewell is born. Soon he is sneaking files and photographing sensitive documents, keeping the West informed of the USSR’s plans - right in the heart of KGB headquarters.

The most complete account of these dramatic events ever recorded, Kostin and Raynaud’s thorough investigation is a fascinating tour de force. Probing further into Vetrov’s psychological profile than ever before, they provide groundbreaking insight into the man whose life helped hasten the end of the Cold War.

What Angels Fear --> Sebastian St Cyr Mystery (book 1 of 11)

Whispersync: no deals at this time

It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man - Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars.

Whispersync: the Audible book is $3.49, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($1.99)

The wild second adventure for unforgettable antiquities thief Owl - a modern-day "Indiana Jane" who reluctantly navigates the hidden supernatural world - from the pen of rising urban fantasy star Kristi Charish. For fans of Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, Jennifer Estep, Jenn Bennett, and the like. Alix Hiboux, better known as Owl, international antiquities thief for hire, is settling in to her new contract job for Vegas mogul Mr. Kurosawa, a red dragon with a penchant for ancient, supernatural artifacts. And now he has his sights set on some treasures of the mysterious Syrian City of the Dead that are sitting in a recluse's private collection. There's just one wrinkle. To stop the resurrection of an undead army that could wreak havoc on Los Angeles, Owl must break in to a heavily guarded archaeological site in one of the most volatile regions in the world. A detour through Libya and a run-in with Somali pirates sends the clock ticking hastily toward total paranormal disaster. Meanwhile, Alexander and the Paris vampires have stopped stalking Owl's apartment, but they have by no means forgotten their death grudge against her. To top everything off, Owl finds out the hard way that there is nothing heavenly about the City of Angels....

Lost Canyon

Whispersync: the Audible book is $3.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($0.99)

Four people on a backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada find more adventure than they ever imagined. They are drawn to the mountains for reasons as diverse as their own lives. Gwen Foster, a counselor for at-risk youths, is struggling with burnout from the demands of her job. Real estate agent Oscar Barajas is adjusting to the fall of the housing market and being a single parent. Todd Harris, an attorney, is stuck in a lucrative but unfulfilling career-and in a failing marriage. They are all brought together by their trainer, Tracy Cole, a former athlete with a taste for risky pursuits. When the hikers start up a pristine mountain trail that hasn't been traveled in years, all they have to guide them is a hand-drawn map of a remote, mysterious place called Lost Canyon. At first, the route past high alpine lakes and under towering, snowcapped peaks offers all the freedom and exhilaration they'd hoped for. But when they stumble onto someone who doesn't want to be found, the group finds itself faced with a series of dangerous conflicts, moral dilemmas, confrontations with nature, and an all-out struggle for survival. Moving effortlessly between city and wilderness, Lost Canyon explores the ways that race, class, and culture shape experience and perception. It examines the choices good people must face in desperate situations. Set in the grand, wild landscape of California's mountains, Lost Canyon is a story of brewing social tensions and breathtaking adventure that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats.

Sprig Muslin

Whispersync: the Audible book is $4.49, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($1.99)

Finding so young and pretty a girl as Amanda wandering unattended, Sir Gareth Ludlow knows it is his duty as a man of honour to restore her to her family. But it is to prove no easy task for the Corinthian. His captive in sprig muslin has more than her rapturous good looks and bandboxes to aid her - she is also possessed of a runaway imagination...

En route to propose to his sensible acquaintance Lady Hester, Sir Gareth Ludlow finds young, pretty Amanda wandering unattended and knows it is his duty to bring her back to her family. This turns out to be a challenge as Amanda seems to possess an imagination as intriguing as it is dangerous. Lady Hester stuns both him and her family when she refuses him. At her age, no one would expect her to turn down such an eligible suitor. But Lady Hester has met the indomitable Amanda. How can the quiet, intelligent Hester hope to compete with such a lively young lady?

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Whispersync: the Audible book is $7.99, if you own or borrow the Kindle ebook ($1.99)

A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity. His wife Katie scrubs floors to put food on the table and clothes on her children's backs, instilling in them the values of being practical and planning ahead. When Johnny dies, leaving Katie pregnant, Francie, smart, pensive and hoping for something better, cannot believe that life can carry on as before. But with her own determination, and that of her mother behind her, Francie is able to move toward the future of her dreams, completing her education and heading off to college, always carrying the beloved Brooklyn of her childhood in her heart.

Looks like Audible has just started a half-price sale--don't know the details; I was literally in the middle of browsing and checking my wish list, and suddenly everything seems to be marked down to half off the original prices, though I don't seen any announcement on the home page and haven't gotten an e-mail.

Thanks for the heads up.

I went to my wishlist at Audible and, indeed, everything was marked down. Unfortunately, very few were marked down half. But there are definitely some that I'll pull the trigger on and buy during the sale.

As far as I see, my experience is the same as Catlady's. All prices seem to be marked down to half the list price. The price I would have paid is less, so the discounted price isn't half; however, once it pushes the price below the price of a credit I'm going to give it hard consideration.

An observation . . . . I notice that a considerable number of The Great Courses courses are half price. So far, those have been ones that are at the lower price points (as you might expect, lower priced audios roughly correspond to shorter audio lengths).

The Great Courses courses at Audible are already priced much, much lower than the regular prices at The Great Courses. Only during some especially good sales does The Great Courses company have prices that compare with Audible's everyday prices. When Audible has a sale like this one, the prices represent tremendous value.

I can't speak too highly of The Great Courses--both the course quality and the good way that they conduct business, too.

Hmmm . . . I wonder why I'm not having the same experience? I am mathematically-challenged, but I don't have any difficulty scanning a list like my wishlist and picking out the ones that are half price. And there just aren't that many for me.

Are you referring to Channels (which is currently in beta testing)? If so, there is a channel for it, but there are only 4 half hour lectures on it. Hopefully, Audible will add a lot more.

Yeah, it is strange. I don't know how to explain it. You might want to give Audible and ask what's up.
