Actually, TTS alone would not satisfy ADA; there's more to it than that. Here's an example of a truly accessible device:

ADA requirements cover many things. And an interesting aside is there is an ADA requirement for how much pressure it takes to open a bathroom door.

What does the connectivity of cable boxes have to do with anything? Last time I checked, cable boxes were not meant to be portable in any way, and also had no "accessibility" features built in to them.

Huh?? My concerns with being always connected have nothing to do with privacy...it has to do with the fact that I spend time in places where there is no wireless internet of any sort...no cell phone signal of any kind, and the only Internet is dial-up over the telephone land lines. I need a device that will work whether I'm connected or not.

Ive never had over the air connectivity with my Kindles, unless I walked up the street to the corner. Kind of like Green Acres.

And the desert.
And, although I live in the United States, I spent a lot of my years in Asia, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands and at sea.

Do not assume people on this forum all live in built up areas.

How many examples do you want?
Most of Interstate 10 west of San Antonio.
Brownwood, Tx if you have Verizon.
Parts of Southern Oklahoma.
Cleburne State Park.
Most of Lake Mineral Wells.
Nearly all of Interstate 37.
Little place called McDonald Observatory.

Or in addition to what Phogg said, some people travel and run across no 3g.

Northwestern Massachusetts in the US. I don't live there, but I do spend quite a bit of time there, and cell phone signal is seldom, and high speed Internet non-existent (unless you count satellite, which I don't) Mobile hotspots don't work without any sort of cell signal, by the way.

Even in the Netherlands, which stands at place nr. 7 when looking at internet peneration (93.96%) there are large patches of small communities, especially in the east, that have limited access to 3G. At some places, the best you can get is slow ADSL. The reason access is limited in large parts of the east and somewhat in the north is because it's full of farmland over there.
