Well, she's pretty extraordinary, I admit. And I get the difference in preferred genre. But if you find yourself looking for an exciting read, and given that it's on Overdrive...

Absolutely. I put it on my wishlist at the library for when I'm in the mood to try something else.

I'm currently listening to Mycroft Holmes by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with Anna Waterhouse (narrated by Damian Lynch). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been a guest columnist for Time magazine and The Washington Post. He says that one of his passions has always been Sherlock Holmes, so writing this novel about his smarter brother is a natural step.
Oh yeah, I understand the author also played a bit of basketball. |

I finished No One Knows, by J. T. Ellison. The story was progressing nicely, but then it seemed to go haywire in the last quarter or so. There was one ginormous coincidence that bugged me--largely because it didn't need to be a coincidence; it could have been explained as a character keeping a secret. I guessed early on what the big "surprise" would be, though not the details. I like when an author can pull off a shocker with subtle misdirection, but here I felt the author didn't quite play fair.
Bottom line: It was OK. I'm not going to rush to read other books by Ellison, but I would try another if the premise sounds interesting. |

I'm listening to Caesar: Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy, narrated by Derek Perkins, and it's enthralling. Non-fiction and 25 hours long, this is the type of audiobook that I usually like to break up with something light, but there's no need here.
Just as well, my current Wodehouse is languishing a bit. Not the Master at his best and even Frederick Davidson is not up to form, and he's my favorite reader of Wodehouse. My issue here is with his accents, not his strong point. A story narrated by a Frenchman was painful and I'm starting to resent his rendition of American voices. We don't all talk through our noses! |

One advantage to listening to SF -- no accent is wrong or required. ![]() Speaking of which, I'm currently finishing up Elizabeth Moon's Marque and Reprisal, read adequately by Cynthia Holloway. This is the second book in the author's Vatta's War series. But I'm going to have to finish it quickly -- the newest book in the Foreigner series from CJ Cherryh, Visitor, has released and I want to jump right in to it! |

<grin> Why did I expect you to say that?
![]() Decided to read the eBook version of Visitor, while listening to the audio book version of the latest Mary Russell book from Laurie King. Last edited by CRussel; 04-06-2016 at 11:44 AM. |

An MP3 CD set is a storage CD with MP3's on it instead of direct audio. Many modern CD players can play them directly, just as if they were ordinary audio CDs. The advantage is that they hold far more than the 60-74 minutes of audio on a typical audio CD. Usually you can get a 15 hour book that would likely take anywhere from 12 to 15 CD can now fit on some smaller number (2-3? I don't remember.)
If you don't have a CD/DVD player that can handle them directly, the MP3's can still be played as MP3s on your favourite computer, or transferred to your preferred iDevice or MP3 player. But £34.00 seems a bit pricey. (Look for a used one? Get a trial US Audible membership and get it for free?) |
